Mt. Adams Institute
FOUNDED IN: 2011
MISSION
To strengthen the connection between people and the natural world through education, service learning, career development and research. We do this through the “Get Outside” Continuum, which in simple terms means we engage kids through adults in a variety of activities, programs and opportunities suited to their age, experience and availability.
DESCRIPTION
Mt.Adams Institute has four distinct programs:
VetsWorks GreenCorps - VetsWork: GreenCorps is a twelve week career training program for military veterans interested in wildfire landscape management, wildland firefighting and other natural resource management / public lands careers. VetsWork GreenCorps participants serve with the Umatilla National Forest and live in Forest Service bunkhouses for the duration of the program. A career development program where participants learn new skills and build professional networks. VetsWorks GreenCorps is a workforce development program where land management agencies have an active role in shaping its future workforce and a community and national service program (AmeriCorps) that engages veterans in civilian service to our public lands and natural resources. Participants receive a modest living stipend, an AmeriCorps education award, and basic health coverage.
VetsWorks Environment - VetsWork: Environment is an eleven month career development internship program for military veterans interested in the natural resources management, public lands, and environment sector. VetsWork participants are placed at local, state, and federal land management agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service where they provide project support while learning about various career paths. This program differs from GreenCorps in that it is mainly individual placement based and takes place in various locations.
Public Land Stewards - Public Lands Stewards is a career development program for young adults, ages 21-30, interested in learning more about public lands and natural resources management. The PLS program places participants in a 25-week internship with agencies like the Forest Service, Fish & Wildlife Service and environmental nonprofits throughout Washington and Oregon. Volunteer opportunities include wilderness ranger positions, trail maintenance and construction, invasive species mitigation and wildlife impact surveys, environment education and volunteer coordination. These projects typically occur May to October and are suitable for individuals interested and/or experienced in working and living outside for extended periods of time.
Cascade Mountain School - Cascade Mountain School is a residential STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) program for students and is dedicated to cultivating individual responsibility and personal growth; fostering creation of community and understanding of the natural world; and excelling in scientific inquiry, systems thinking, and sustainability studies. Cascade Mountain School offers a variety of day and overnight summer camps for K-12 students, custom school programs during the spring and fall, and adult and family outing events. All of our programs include outdoor adventure, fun, service, and hands-on learning! Topics include, but are not limited to: food systems and ecological agriculture, watershed science, mindfulness and personal health, primitive and survival skills, and tinkering.
