Mt.Adams Institute has two distinct Corps programs: VetsWorks - VetsWork is an eleven-month, career development internship program for military veterans interested in the natural resources management, public lands, and environment sector. VetsWork participants are placed at local, state, and federal land management agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service where they provide project support while learning about various career paths. This program offers individual placements and takes place nationally. Land Stewards - Lands Stewards (LS) is a career development program for young adults, ages 21-30, interested in learning more about public lands and natural resources management. The LS program places participants in a 25-week internship with agencies like the Forest Service, Fish & Wildlife Service and environmental nonprofits throughout Washington and Oregon. Position opportunities include wilderness ranger, trail maintenance and construction, invasive species mitigation and wildlife impact surveys, environment education and volunteer coordination. These projects typically occur May to October and are suitable for individuals interested and/or experienced in working and living outside for extended periods of time.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Mt. Adams Institute (MAI) is a nonprofit organization based in the rural community of Trout Lake, Washington with a mission of strengthening the connection between people and the natural world through education, service learning, career development, and research. MAI’s annual budget supports a staff of eleven and up to 75 AmeriCorps members.
MAI’s programs serve youth, adults, veterans and families in a variety of formats that embrace equity, diversity and inclusion. MAI is working to create opportunities to connect individuals with the natural world and to support those who are historically underrepresented in the outdoor recreation and natural resource career fields.
Reporting to and in partnership with the Executive Director (ED), the Programs Director is responsible for implementing the strategic vision, mission and goals of the AmeriCorps programs: VetsWork & Land Stewards.
- VetsWork - a career development program for military veterans interested in natural resources management/public lands careers.
- Lands Stewards - a career development program for young adults, ages 21-30, interested in natural resources management/public lands careers.
- New Pilot Program(s) – will work with staff and partners to develop new programs that meet the mission of MAI.
This position will directly supervise the AmeriCorps Programs Manager, VetsWork Coordinator and Land Stewards Coordinator. This position requires an individual who is highly organized and detail oriented, has excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and is able to juggle many tasks and priorities simultaneously.
JOB DUTIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Program Oversight and Improvement
- Direct and monitor the AmeriCorps programs.
- Direct Program Standard Operating Procedure development and keep updated.
- Support planning and facilitation of AmeriCorps Interns orientation and trainings, including logistics such as transportation, room/board and outside trainers/resource providers.
- Oversee the collection, storage and retention of required program documentation, including AmeriCorps Interns paperwork, forms and other supporting records.
- Coordinate the development and implementation of an AmeriCorps program evaluation plan.
- Oversee processes that ensure compliance with all necessary AmeriCorps grant requirements including standards, reporting and timelines.
- Review programs on an annual basis and adjust for improved quality and efficiency.
- Monitor and track fiscal health of the AmeriCorps program, including budget development, partner cost structures, reconciliation and reporting.
- Maintain relationship with AmeriCorps/CNCS portfolio manager.
- Provide support and guidance to program coordinators.
- Engage directly in program orientations and events.
Partnership Development
- Develop and expand partnerships that support MAI’s AmeriCorps programs.
- Direct RFP development and release, marketing strategies, outreach, and selection.
- Develop Partner agreements/contracts and monitor progress, quality and safety in adherence to Mt. Adams Institute and AmeriCorps standards.
- Conduct research and design partnerships and programs that expand options for participants, either under the AmeriCorps grant or independent of that funding.
- Facilitate positive public relations and Mt. Adams Institute/Programs/AmeriCorps publicity.
- Develop and maintain functional relationships with key stakeholders, including Partner organizations, The Corps Network, AmeriCorps/CNCS, Department of Labor and the VA.
Other Duties
- Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.
- Participate on the MAI Staff Leadership team.
- Embrace and foster MAI’s work culture.
- Facilitate positive public relations between Mt. Adams Institute and other stakeholders.
- Attend relevant annual conferences including AmeriCorps and The Corps Network.
- Other duties that support organizational needs may be assigned
REQUIREMENTS
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
- Any combination of experience and education that provides the necessary skills, knowledge and ability to perform the tasks associated with this role.
- At least five years of experience preferred in administrative operations, office management, human resources, business management, communications, or related field.
- A bachelor’s degree in a related field. Non-profit experience preferred.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, supervisory and communication skills
- Demonstrated excellence in building and maintaining strong interpersonal relationships with staff, participants and partners.
- Prior experience with AmeriCorps, military, service learning, education, natural resources and/or public lands agencies.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
WORKING CONDITIONS
- MAI’s hybrid work environment includes working from home, at our shared office in Trout Lake, WA., in the field and travel to conferences, meetings and trainings.
- In-Office Expectations for this position:
- MAI leadership positions are expected to be in the office at least twice a week (Tuesdays & Wednesdays)
- There will be situations when employees will be in the office more frequently based on required in-person collaboration, on individual positions, projects, or other assigned duties.
- MAI office and campus are located in a rural setting. The commute in winter can be subject to icy or snowy conditions.
- Work will involve some overnight travel throughout the year.
- Must follow all health and safety policies and procedures, including any future changes that may be implemented. Policies may include masking/social distancing, remote/virtual work/PPE, altered field duties, and other restrictions determined to be necessary to keep site staff, partners and the public safe.
OTHER EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
- Criminal background check: In order to protect the wellbeing of its employees, MAI finalists for a position must successfully complete a criminal records and fingerprint background check. Criminal convictions do not necessarily preclude employment and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. - 3-year driving abstract
- Vehicle insurance that meets the following minimums: $100,000 per occurrence for bodily injury per person in an accident; $300,000 for all bodily injuries in an accident; and $50,000 for property damage in an accident.
