“One of the most important lessons I learned in Youth Corps is that life isn’t only what your environment shows you. Get outside and go within the tree lines and explore the beautiful presence of life outdoors! Youth Corps has been an adventure I’ll never forget. It’s something that everyone should experience in this life.”
Samir Johnson does not give up easily. Having left high school because he was dissatisfied with the environment there, he came to New Jersey Youth Corps of Phillipsburg (NJYCP) in the summer of 2022, looking for a fresh start. He knew education was essential to his success. Though it didn’t come easily, Samir buckled down, made the most of every chance to learn, and earned his high school diploma in May 2023.
After earning his diploma, Samir joined the Phillipsburg Climate Corps as part of the DREAM Team (Delaware River Environmental Ambassador & Mentor). He stepped into a leadership role assisting staff in supervising NJYC Corpsmembers while working on projects promoting climate resiliency. The work ethic he exhibited in the classroom extended to projects in the field; Samir embraced each new opportunity presented to him. From surveying for wood and box turtles, to monitoring and collecting water data, to building bridges and trails, to engaging in an entrepreneurial program collaborating with youth from all over the world, Samir approached his work with curiosity and determination.
“In the Islamic faith, we believe in taking care of the Earth as it is the creation of Allah,” said Samir. “As all of Allah’s creation is beautiful and it is our job not only as Muslims but humans to keep the perfect world he built clean and beautiful. My work in the Corps allowed me to do just that.”
Samir was often requested and relied upon by NJYCP’s program partners at the Musconetcong Watershed Association and Merrill Creek Reservoir to take the lead on projects. He served in a capacity that served a dual purpose: exploring new opportunities while leading by example. Through his Corps experience, Samir began to see himself as a leader, and to have others view him that way as well. Never one to back down from a challenge, Samir would motivate other Corpsmembers by reminding them of their potential – and that a little temporary struggle is always worth the reward.
As one NJYCP partner at Merrill Creek Reservoir stated, “Samir’s enthusiasm and newfound passion for wildlife…was very apparent in not only his work ethic in the field, but also in his appetite to learn more about the natural environment…Samir was a ‘natural’ leader when it came assisting other students with understanding the projects, working collaboratively with them and our staff, as well as showing interest and empathy for his fellow classmates.”
A third generation American, Samir is now the first of his family to enroll in college. He is pursuing an associate’s degree in business management at Northampton County Community College and also started the campuses first group dedicated to Islam.
“Before I joined Youth Corps, I felt lost and confused. My Youth Corps experience helped me understand the interconnection of a lot of things,” said Samir. “For example, how planting trees in one place impacts water quality somewhere else. I never saw the world that way before. It showed me how we have a responsibility to minimize the impact we have on the planet. It helped me understand how I can have an impact because in doing this work, other people see me differently. All of these things are connected through my work at Youth Corps.”
Samir’s vision for the future is to potentially build a business in the sustainable food industry that would benefit people living in urban areas. He also says he simply wants to continue learning and becoming the best version of himself, someone that youth in his neighborhood can look up to. Samir has already achieved this goal.
