During the 2024 – 2025 program year, The Corps Network will subgrant funds to 20 Corps programs across 21 states.
WASHINGTON, DC (May 10, 2024) – The Corps Network, the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps, announces the receipt of an AmeriCorps State and National award of over $12.8 million to support continuation of The Corps Network’s Opportunity Youth Service Initiative (OYSI). Over the coming program year (October 1, 2024 – September 30, 2025), The Corps Network will subgrant funds to 20 Corps operating across 21 states to engage up to 1,192 AmeriCorps members.
Launched in 2013, OYSI is designed to provide education and conservation service experience to young people who face barriers to education or employment, such as poverty, unemployment, past court involvement, or a physical or learning disability. During their term of service, OYSI AmeriCorps members develop job skills, earn certifications, complete their high school requirements, and receive assistance to transition to postsecondary education or the workforce. Upon completion of their term of service, participants are eligible to receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award.
This announcement of new AmeriCorps funding comes shortly after AmeriCorps, the White House, and several other federal agencies launched recruitment for the American Climate Corps (ACC). Led by the White House and AmeriCorps, the ACC is a new national initiative to engage more young people in conservation-focused service and workforce development. Several programs participating in OYSI are implementing partners of the ACC and are currently recruiting on ClimateCorps.gov.
Mary Ellen Sprenkel, President and CEO of The Corps Network, released the following statement:
Participating in a national service program can be lifechanging. We are grateful to continue the Opportunity Youth Service Initiative and work with our member organizations to provide more than a thousand young adults the chance to advance their career and education goals through service.
We applaud the White House and our federal partners for committing to put equity at the center of recruiting and programming decisions for the newly launched American Climate Corps. By supporting young people in overcoming barriers to work and school, OYSI programs contribute to the goals of the ACC and help bring conservation service and job training experience within reach of more young Americans.
While we are excited about the program year ahead for OYSI, we are deeply concerned about potential cuts to AmeriCorps for fiscal year 2025. The President’s proposed budget seeks important investments to increase compensation for AmeriCorps members and expand the ACC, but at the expense of more than 20,000 service positions. The Corps Network’s member organizations have seen a surge in applications in recent years. We encourage our leaders to expand investment in AmeriCorps to not only provide members with higher living allowances, but provide more opportunities for people to serve and make a difference.
The projects OYSI members will complete include, but are not limited to, invasive species removal, home weatherization, tree planting, disaster response, park and garden maintenance, and more. Among other achievements, OYSI members during the 2022 – 2023 program year planted more than 17,700 trees, improved more than 15,500 acres of public and Tribal lands, treated over 2,700 acres of hazardous fire fuels, and more.

- American YouthWorks
- Canyon Country Youth Corps
