WASHINGTON, D.C. — The White House has announced the nomination of Michael Connor as the nominee for Deputy Secretary of the Department of the Interior. Connor currently serves as Commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation.
Under the leadership of Mr. Connor, the Bureau of Reclamation launched a Youth Conservation Program, involving participants in cultural and natural resource conservation projects. In 2010, The Corps Network partnered with the Bureau of Reclamation to accomplish a variety of maintenance and conservation projects on Bureau of Reclamation lands. Funded through American Recovery and Investment Act dollars, five Conservation Corps from across the nation participated at locations in Idaho, Colorado, California and Oklahoma.
“Given his wealth of experience at the Bureau of Reclamation and his time with the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Michael is an ideal choice to help lead the Department of Interior. Through our innovative partnership with the Bureau of Reclamation, Conservation Corps from across the country worked on projects involving the development on new recreation facilities in California, hazardous fuel reduction in Idaho, and invasive species removal and restoration of the Lower Colorado River Basin. We urge the Senate to act quickly and confirm Michael Connor as Deputy Secretary,” said Mary Ellen Ardouny, President and CEO of The Corps Network, the national association of Service and Conservation Corps.
“Mike Connor has been a champion for engaging young people as stewards of public lands and waters. The Public Lands Service Coalition applauds his nomination and looks forward to working with Commissioner Connor in his new position,” explained Harry Bruell, CEO & President, Southwest Conservation Corps and Chair, Partnership for the 21st Century Conservation Service Corps.
