WASHINGTON, DC (March 29, 2022) – The Corps Network, the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps, extends appreciation to the Biden-Harris Administration for inclusion of funding for a Civilian Climate Corps initiative in the President’s fiscal year 2023 budget proposal. Among other provisions, the budget proposal – which was released March 28, 2022 – includes an increase in funding for AmeriCorps and funding for programs that will not only help address the climate crisis, but create opportunities for communities that have been historically underserved.
Mary Ellen Sprenkel, President and CEO of The Corps Network, released the following statement:
On behalf of the more than 140 Service and Conservation Corps programs engaging in critical work across the country, I thank the Biden-Harris Administration for releasing a proposed budget that acknowledges the importance of Corps programming. President Biden’s fiscal year 2023 budget would support the work the Corps movement is already doing to address climate change and train the next generation of environmental stewards.
I also applaud the Administration for centering equity in the budget proposal. As the proposal indicates, it is critical that our country prioritize funding for career growth, education, and climate response in communities that have historically faced disinvestment.
I am happy to see that the Biden Administration is again confirming its support of Service and Conservation Corps. The President’s fiscal year 2023 budget expands on his fiscal year 2022 budget request and on his Executive Order on Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad, which calls to use existing appropriations to launch a Civilian Climate Corps. The Corps Network is grateful that national service, workforce development, and projects to address climate change are a priority for the White House. We continue to support the reconciliation process as a path for funding Climate Corps efforts; we look forward to working with our champions in Congress to see reconciliation legislation passed.
