WASHINGTON, DC (May 3) – The Corps Network, the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps, is pleased to announce 28 organizations have been selected to host the initial cohort of Working Lands Climate Corps (WLCC) members across the country. These organizations are now recruiting to fill more than 100 WLCC positions. Position descriptions are posted at ClimateCorps.gov (go to Join and search “Working Lands”). A common application for all WLCC positions can be found at corpsnetwork.org/wlcc-apply.
The WLCC is a program of the American Climate Corps (ACC). It is a collaboration between The Corps Network, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD), and AmeriCorps. The WLCC will engage young adults in technical skills training and projects focused on advancing climate-smart agriculture and forestry practices.
“Congratulations to the organizations selected to host the initial cohort of Working Lands Climate Corps members. We reviewed many inspiring proposals for this opportunity; I am excited to see the first WLCC members get to work over the coming months on a range of activities that will prepare them for impactful, rewarding careers while they help build more resilient and sustainable farms and forests,” said Mary Ellen Sprenkel, President and CEO of The Corps Network. “As the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps, we are proud of the work Corps have been doing in this space for decades and thrilled to help implement this new initiative of the American Climate Corps.”
Funding from the Platform for Agriculture and Climate Transformation (PACT) will support The Corps Network’s ability to provide subgrants to host organizations to facilitate WLCC activities. WLCC host organizations will recruit members and work with the NACD and state and county-level staff of the NRCS, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, to facilitate conservation and climate resilience projects, track WLCC member activities, and train members for careers in climate-smart agriculture and forestry. Some WLCC members will have the opportunity to be enrolled as AmeriCorps members and receive Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards, where funding allows.
The Corps Network and partners solicited proposals from prospective WLCC host organizations in February. Per the eligibility requirements, each WLCC host organization is either a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) U.S. organization, Tribal government, or a unit of a state, local, or special district government. Each WLCC host organization will support from 1 – 15 WLCC members. Member activities will involve outreach and education, conservation technical assistance, workforce development and training, or any combination of these three program elements.
WLCC members will focus on providing technical assistance to initiate or enhance soil and water conservation practices that promote productivity and sustainability. Through their assignments with the selected host organizations, members will work with landowners, producers, and communities to encourage the adoption of climate-smart agriculture and forestry practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit future climate change. Most WLCC projects are expected to begin by October 2024.

Launched by the Biden Administration in September 2023, the American Climate Corps (ACC) is an initiative that, in its first year, seeks to engage 20,000 young people in “conserving and restoring our lands and waters, bolstering community resilience, deploying clean energy, implementing energy efficient technologies, and advancing environmental justice.” On Earth Day – April 22, 2024 – the Biden Administration made a series of ACC announcements and launched ClimateCorps.gov: a new website where individuals can learn about the ACC and apply for ACC positions.
