100+ Volunteers Gather Outside Washington, DC, for The Corps Network 10th Great Outdoors Day of Service
Partners of The Corps Network and young adults from multiple Corps across the region gathered for maintenance and improvement projects at Greenbelt Park in Greenbelt, MD.
WASHINGTON, DC –– Nearly 140 volunteers signed up to participate in The Corps Network’s 10th Great Outdoors Day of Service today, June 27, at Greenbelt Park in Greenbelt, MD. Volunteers helped the National Park Service with maintenance and improvement project, including painting, invasive species removal, and campsite improvement activities.
June is Great Outdoors Month, a time to celebrate public lands and outdoor recreation. Various organizations host events throughout the month to encourage Americans to get outside and enjoy our shared natural spaces. The Corps Network’s Great Outdoors Day of Service launched in 2014 to celebrate service and raise awareness about the critical role of volunteers and national service programs in helping maintain public lands (the event was not held in 2020 or 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic).
“For more than 90 years, Corps programs have helped manage America’s parks and train a new generation of natural resource stewards. For 10 years, The Corps Network is proud to have gathered Corps and Corps supporters for an event that seeks to celebrate outdoor service and highlight how everyone can play a role in protecting the places we recreate and relax,” said Mary Ellen Sprenkel, President and CEO of The Corps Network. “Thank you to our sponsors, distinguished guests, partners, and volunteers. And thank you to the more than 1,000 volunteers who have supported this event over the past decade.”
At least seven member organizations of The Corps Network travelled from multiple states to have staff and/or Corpsmembers represented at the event. These organizations include Civic Works (MD), Earth Conservation Corps (DC), Harpers Ferry Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center (WV), Latin American Youth Center – Montgomery County Conservation Corps (MD), Maryland Conservation Corps (MD), New Jersey Youth Corps of Phillipsburg (NJ), and the Student Conservation Association (National). The 2025 Day of Service was sponsored by NT Concepts, the National Park Foundation, and Guest Services, Inc.
The event started with a welcoming ceremony that included remarks from several invited guests. Speakers included Michael Commisso, Acting Superintendent of National Capital Parks-East; Joshua W.D. Coursey, Senior Advisor to the Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; Rita Moss, Associate Director for Workforce at the National Park Service; and Jennifer Bastress Tahmasebi, Interim Agency Head of AmeriCorps.
This year’s Day of Service marked a delayed observance of National Service and Conservation Corps Day. A bipartisan resolution was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this month to officially recognize the second Friday in June as National Service and Conservation Corps Day. This is a day to celebrate Corps and the thousands of young people who serve in Corps every year. It is also an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the important role of volunteers and national service programs in helping maintain public lands.
