WHY: | June is Great Outdoors Month™: a presidentially-proclaimed month-long celebration of outdoor recreation. However, many of our favorite outdoor pastimes would not be possible without proper stewardship of park resources. The Corps Network Great Outdoors Day of Service is an annual event that engages volunteers in hands-on park maintenance in the nation’s capital and raises awareness about ongoing ways people can participate in volunteer or national service programs on public lands. Parks in Washington, DC alone have over $1.2 billion in deferred maintenance; the Day of Service highlights how everyone can help maintain and improve our shared natural and cultural resources. Activities to include repairing trails and boardwalks closed due to flooding; clearing overgrown trails; invasive species removal; landscaping; graffiti removal and other projects. The Day of Service comes at the end of Outdoor Stewardship Week (#ServeOutdoors), a national social media campaign to raise awareness about service and volunteerism outdoors. |
