ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Stewards Individual Placement Program places individual placements across the nation in projects that build capacity, improve access to natural resources, develop and support innovative solutions, develop opportunities for service and economic development, and empower leaders.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
YES (Youth Empowerment Stewards) Program:

That’s why we need YOU. Become a Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) intern and help make the outdoors more accessible for all!
Friends of Hawai’i National Park YES Intern:
Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. YES interns focus on barriers to entry for individuals with disabilities in the outdoor workplace.
Stewards, in partnership with Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, are seeking 4 YES interns for 12-week placements. Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park support the park in the preservation, interpretation, and education of current and future generations. The organization supports numerous programs and projects in the park, including but not limited to: invasive species removal, endangered habitat, trail restoration, visitor experience service projects and more.
YES Intern positions at Friends of Hawaii National Park include:
- Trail Guardian Level 1- Will focus on trail and special ecological area invasive plant species removal and trail maintenance (2 YES positions available)
- Website and Social Media Team Member Level 1 – Will focus on 508 compliance on various outreach platforms and will assist with administrative duties (1 YES position available)
- Guardians Kapuna Interviewer/Media 1 – Will interview Kapuna senior citizens and record interviews for print and video resources (1 YES position available)
YES interns will work with the invasive species control team removing species from all over 330,000 acre park. Varied duties include trail surveys looking for trash and removal of to ensure great visitor experiences. Trail work and special ecological area work will include on-site training using basic hand tools and all safety equipment (risk is low). Office work will include working with the IT department on website and social media platforms, filing, typing and answering telephones. YES intern will also conduct and record interviews with Kapuna senior citizens for preservation.
JOB DUTIES
- Cut, dig, remove and herbicide invasive ginger.
- Trash removal from culturally significant sites.
- Data entry within website platform.
- Content production for website and social media platforms.
- Answer telephones as receptionist in organization.
- Basic filing of Hawai’i Institute documents and youth program documents.
- Production of simple word documents, PowerPoint presentations and excel spreadsheets.
- Series interviews of indigenous people related to history of place, connection to land, lessons learned.
- Production crew work related to interviews.
REQUIREMENTS
- To Be a US Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident
- To be between the ages of 18-24, or a Veteran up to the age of 34
- Adaptability and capacity to work in a fluid environment
- Ability to communicate and collaborate in a variety of settings
- Interest in history, education, and/or interpretation
- Ability to have reliable transportation to work
- Basic computer skills
- Communication skills
- Drive to learn and experience new things!
