ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Canyon Country Youth Corps (CCYC) is a program operated by the Canyon County Discovery Center (CCDC) in Monticello, Utah. CCYC provides opportunities for youth and young adults to participate in service projects on public lands in Southeastern Utah in partnership with the land-managing agencies of the region. Service Projects include trail maintenance and construction; fence construction, repair or demolition; habitat restoration; mechanical and non-mechanical vegetation thinning; invasive species removal and treatment; and other conservation related projects in backcountry and front country settings.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The CCYC Field Manager is responsible for the supervision of CCYC field crews. The Field Manager provides professional leadership and technical expertise to staff and crews, ensuring that all members are adequately trained and prepared to perform high quality work in a safe environment. The CCYC Field Manager reports to the CCYC Program Director. Housing assistance may be available.
JOB DUTIES
Administration - 50%
- Supervises support staff, employees and volunteers.
- Completes written mid-term and final evaluations for all field staff.
- Conducts regular risk management and policy audits and enters data into the database for tracking purposes.
- Provides technical, logistical, and administrative support to crews.
- Oversees the management of the CCYC education programs and assists Member Services Manager with the oversight of the writing program
- Provides crews with professional feedback in a structured environment.
- Serves as a role model, resource, mediator, and advisor for crews.
- Maintains a positive and professional attitude at all times.
- Ensures compliance with CCYC/CCDC safety policies and procedures by issuing warnings and dismissing members from the program when necessary.
- Assists partnerships coordinator in scheduling.
- Oversees the day to day management of conservation projects in the region and throughout the state.
Training - 25%
- Lead on the training of all field bosses, crew leaders and crew members with the support of the CCYC staff.
- Develops lesson plans and training materials and oversees crew leader training topics, including trail maintenance & construction, proper tool use & maintenance, chainsaw, fence construction & maintenance, critical incident scenarios, outdoor leadership skills, pre-project planning & organization, conflict-resolution, debriefs & feedback.
- Leads seasonal crew member orientation in topics including outdoor skills, expedition behavior, Leave No Trace, food & menu planning, map & compass, common backcountry medical issues, packing and fitting a backpack, food storage, hygiene, water purification, stove operation, dish washing systems.
- Implements technical skills training for field crews, including the safe and proper use of chainsaws, crosscut saws, tool maintenance, vehicle maintenance and white-water rafting.
- Evaluates technical skill retention during field site visits.
- Meets with program staff to annually assess and revise member training.
Manage, maintain and purchase tools and equipment - 25%
- Manage, maintain and purchase tools and equipment.
- Supervise the development of efficient tool maintenance, storage and check out systems.
- Research tool and equipment purchases based upon crew needs and budget.
- Assist the Partnerships Director with the purchasing of tools, equipment, group gear and first aid supplies.
- Report monthly on purchase tracking for crews so that expenses are routed to appropriate accounts.
- Manage and maintain the physical office space at basecamp. This includes the CCYC shop space and bunkhouse.
REQUIREMENTS
- Leadership experience at a Conservation Corps Program with oversight of field work and members
- Initiative to act independently with minimal supervision
- Demonstrated experience in coordinating and facilitating trainings
- Supervisory and programming experience and ability to problem solve and respond competently to situations associated with managing young adults.
- Excellent written/verbal communication skills
- Ability to multitask and be flexible with responsibilities
- Demonstrated good judgment and problem solving in emergency situations
- Flexibility, adaptability, and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment
- Working knowledge of natural resource project management such as trail maintenance and construction, shoreline/watershed restoration, forest/prairie management, and wildlife habitat improvement. • Experienced skill level in all or most of the following: trail construction & maintenance, crosscut/chainsaw operation & maintenance, hand tool maintenance, fencing, herbicide application, wildland firefighting, managing front country and backcountry projects.
- Experience with chainsaws and ability to attain an S-212 Wildland Chainsaw Certification
- Experience with Wilderness Medicine and an ability to attain a Wilderness First Responder Certification
- Experience with herbicide application and an ability to attain State Applicator Certification
- Familiarity with AmeriCorps and local, state, and federal natural resource agencies
- Clean and insurable driver’s record & valid driver’s license
- Must be able to pass criminal history background checks
- Desire to spend time in the company of young adult

- S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaw Certification
This position requires overnight travel and non-traditional work hours, including weekend and evening hours. To successfully perform essential functions, the candidate is required to sit, stand, walk, speak and hear. The field manager may be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl on an infrequent basis and possess the ability to hike and climb in rough terrain. He/she must be able to operate hand tools and reach with hands and arms. The field manager may be required to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
