ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Social Service Aid serves the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program. These positions may be filled for up to a six-month seasonal period, but can vary due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2026
JOB DUTIES
Major Duties Summary:
- Provides education and recreation opportunities, as well as, mentoring, guidance, and oversight to teen enrollees.
- Plans and leads weekend and night recreational activitites (day hiking, backpacking, swimming, rafting, park exploration, wildlife watching, fishing, journaling, etc.) including driving.
- Assists in leading a crew on work projects (such as land-resource projects, trail rehabilitation, fence construction and installation, food-storage box installation, native species conservation, etc).
- Provides safe environment (physical and emotional) for self, coworkers, and teen enrollees including identifying and mitigating safety hazards.
- Mentors and counsels enrollees on personal and shared community living.
Serves as a group leader at a residential Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program. The Yellowstone YCC base camp/facility is located in Mammoth Hot Springs, headquarters of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, elevation 6,200 feet. The YCC facility consists of a dormitory for enrollees and YCC Staff, who are required to live there, and a dining hall facility that is used for meals and meetings during the weekends. From Monday through Friday, work crews mainly camp in front country and backcountry campsites throughout Yellowstone National Park.

- Appointment subject to childcare background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- Government housing may be available.
- You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and/or shift work.
- You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally.
- You will be required to camp overnight away from home up to 6 nights per month.
- You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver’s license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver’s licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
- Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/18/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. Resume must be no more than 2-pages. If resume is longer than the two-page limit, only the experience within the first two pages will be reviewed to determine qualifications.
To qualify for this position at the GS-04 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-03 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: group leader in community or residential recreation or training programs; counselor in a youth summer camp; instructor in a training program for the development of job skills; work that demonstrates the ability to be responsible for and lead and train members of a job crew; group activities leader in the Armed Services; unit leader-monitor-proctor for a dormitory group in a boarding school or other residential facility; aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff in such fields as personnel (private or government), employment guidance in a vocational or academic institution, social service, or manpower development; aid or assistant to professional or associate staff engaged in work of a social services nature in private, public welfare, government program, or community organizations, or in voluntary activities; or aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff working with individuals who are addicted to or abuse alcohol and/or drugs. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two years of education above the high school level that (a) included at least 12 semester hours of subjects directly related to the work of the position, you must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
ICTAP/CTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. Well qualified means that the applicant meets the following: OPM qualification standards for the position; all selective placement factors, where applicable; special qualifying conditions that OPM has approved for the position, where applicable; is physically qualified with reasonable accommodation, where appropriate to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position upon entry; and is rated by the organization at least at the well qualified level on all competencies.
