ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Stewards Individual Placement Program places individual placements across the nation in projects that build capacity, improve access to natural resources, develop and support innovative solutions, develop opportunities for service and economic development, and empower leaders.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Ohio County Solid Waste Authority (OCSWA) is seeking an ambassador to enhance their community’s participation in environmental stewardship, educate and engage youth, mobilize volunteers, and participate in marketing campaigns. Desired end results of this project are increasing recycling rates, reduce contamination rates within recyclable materials, encourage source reduction and environmental stewardship, reduce littering, empower residents and create more opportunities for community members and youth engagement in our Recycling Center’s outdoor green space. A successful candidate will be someone who loves to engage with youth and is interested in pursuing or learning about a career in government and/or an environmental nonprofit.
JOB DUTIES
- Organize volunteers and venues for community litter cleanups
- Schedule, organize, and attend educational outreach events promoting environmental stewardship and recycling
- Recruit and mobilize volunteers for OCSWA sponsored/hosted events
- Represent OCSWA interests at various networking and collaboration opportunities
- Promote OCSWA's 2024 Spring Cleanups, Earth Day Block Party, and Summer Yoga & Recycling series and engage community members in attendance
- Increase use of the outdoor green space at OCSWA's The Highlands Recycling Center with recycling, environmental stewardship, and conservation focus ed activities
- Provide education and promote various marketing campaigns including the following topics: anti-littering, proper recycling, source reduction, proper waste disposal, and diversion options
- Increase youth engagement opportunities
- Create a community asset map to determine best avenues to spur outdoor economy in assigned communities.
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Requirements
- Must be a US Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident
- Able to commit to 32 weeks of service
- Must be 18 years old or older
- High School Diploma or GED (by start of service)
- Must be able to pass federal background check
- Willing to serve in West Virginia (West Virginia resident preferred)
Qualifications and Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Customer service experience
- Ability to lift at least 20 pounds at a time
- Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and walking
- Ability to function well in a high-paced environment
- Ability to perform duties during frequent and extended periods outside of work, subject to all weather conditions and extremes
- Ability to work with youth
- Possession of valid driver’s license with a good driving record (preferred)
