ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Stewards Individual Placement Program places individual placements across the nation in projects that build capacity, improve access to natural resources, develop and support innovative solutions, develop opportunities for service and economic development, and empower leaders.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural and cultural resources. The West Virginia Rural Engagement Ambassadors for Development and Youth (WV READY) is a new collaborative AmeriCorps program sponsored by Stewards Individual Placements. Stewards, in partnership with Volunteer WV, and local community organizations such as Visit Southern West Virginia, is working to support WV’s transition to grow eco-tourism and outdoor recreation opportunities.
The mission of Visit Southern West Virginia is to promote southern West Virginia as a visitor friendly travel destination. Visit Southern West Virginia is a not-for-profit ‘destination marketing’ organization. Visit Southern West Virginia is directly responsible for travel and tourism ‘product awareness’ to visitors for the 9 county region that we promote. These 9 counties are: Raleigh, Mercer, Fayette, Greenbrier, Monroe, McDowell, Nicholas, Wyoming and Summers.
The WV Rural Engagement Ambassador for Development and Youth (WV Ready) AmeriCorps Member at Visit Southern West Virginia will complete asset mapping and identification by conducting member and visitor surveys out in the field, collecting data about attractive assets and to help inform branding strategies. The member will also support local outdoor opportunities by tabling at festivals and recreation events within the represented 9 counties; these outreach events will aim to educate visitors and locals about the organization’s role in boosting the local economy. Additionally, the member will provide communications on projects supporting local outdoor opportunities by interpreting visitor trends to our outdoor assets. Last but not least, Visit Southern West Virginia is also pursuing a Leave No Trace Youth Education program to be launched in 2025; this will involve educating 5th graders in Raleigh and Fayette counties about Leave No Trace principles.
