ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Intergovernmental Internship Cooperative (IIC), hosted by Southern Utah University, develops public land leaders of tomorrow through being a centralized resource of committed and engaged Partners. We are collaborating to provide relevant and meaningful educational experiences and career opportunities to University and other youth in the region and meet partner needs for a diverse workforce. We encourage stewardship of and appreciation for the richness of the region’s lands and resources.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
- Survey and assess the New Mexico Meadow Jumping Mouse (NMMJM) at various locations within the Rio Mora Conservation Area.
- Develop and conduct NMMJM habitat assessments at various locations.
- Create or revise NMMJM standard monitoring protocols, survey maps, and annual reports.
- Assist USFWS Ecological Services with the final revisions for the NMMJM Recovery Plan as required under the Endangered Species Act.
- Create and present at least 1 educational program specific to the New Mexico Meadow Jumping Mouse in Northern New Mexico.
- Assist with other biological, visitor services and maintenance programs at nearby refuges (Maxwell and Las Vegas NWRs).
JOB DUTIES
REQUIREMENTS
- We are looking for resourceful applicants who recently completed a degree in wildlife biology, conservation biology, or a related field and have a strong interest in field-based conservation and accomplishing meaningful habitat and wildlife population management on the ground.
- US Citizenship is required.
- A valid drivers license is required. A personal vehicle encouraged but not required.
- Candidates should be comfortable camping in remote field locations, hiking in rough terrain, driving long distances on rough or unpaved roads, being exposed to high temperatures, working in wet river environments, working in dry and open grassland environments, and working in areas that could have poison ivy, mosquitoes, and rattlesnakes.
- Strong writing and data collection skills are desirable. Comfort with a wide variety of office software (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), GIS, and GPS equipment is helpful.
- Demonstrated cultural competence, including experience working with people from diverse cultures, is desired.
- The intern will need to work both independently, in a team with another intern, and in small groups of staff/volunteers.
