ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Founded in 1975, American YouthWorks connects young people with access to educational and career opportunities, and support services through Conservation Corps programs in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma, and YouthBuild programs in Austin and Taylor, TX. In a supportive learning environment, participants learn new job skills by addressing urgent community issues such as building micro homes for shelterless individuals, disaster response through FEMA deployments, environmental resilience, and access to affordable housing and healthcare. AYW programs are award-winning models that welcome youth and young adults from local communities, offering connections to innovative education and career training that can lead to meaningful employment and career opportunities.

The American YouthWorks – Texas Conservation Corps’ (AYW TXCC) Summer Conservation Program is an AmeriCorps opportunity specifically for Alabama-Coushatta members to work on local habitat restoration projects.
TXCC is searching for Alabama-Coushatta Members to join Summer Conservation Crew positions on Alabama-Coushatta tribal lands!
Participants engage in hands-on conservation projects on public lands, coastal regions, National Parks and recreational areas across the Central Southern United States. The Conservation Corps experience builds leadership skills, connection with community, and prepares young people with skills needed to enter the workforce with a strong work ethic and sense of service. Members will work on trail improvement and habitat restoration projects, and will engage in environmental education on USFS and Alabama Coushatta tribal lands.

- TXCC Operating Site Office Location: 6501 Navigation Blvd Suite Y102 | 77011
Average Age Range: Crew Members range from ages 16-19 and Crew Leaders range from ages 21-28
Available Positions: 2 Crew Leaders | 4 Crew Members
Term Dates: 6/2/2024 – 8/1/2024 (300 HOUR TERM: Minimal-time)
Compensation (AmeriCorps Living Allowance)
- Crew Leaders: $2,720 per month ($1360 semi-monthly)
- Crew Member: $2,400 per month ($1200 semi-monthly)
Educational Requirement:
- Crew Members: No high school diploma or GED required
- Crew Leaders: High school diploma or GED required

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Frequently required to walk and hike over long distances while carrying tools
- Ability to operate tools
- Heavy lifting, bending, and carrying up to 35-50* pounds (*depending on crew type)
- Walking and working on steep or uneven terrain
- Ability to work long days in adverse weather conditions
- Depending on crew type, ability to hitch, camp, and travel throughout the duration of an entire AmeriCorps term
REQUIRED AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Ages 17+ for Crew Members and 21+ for Crew Leaders
- US Citizenship or lawful permanent US Resident
- Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check
- Crew Leaders Only:
- High school diploma or GED
- Clear 3-year Driving Record
- Prior experience in conservation, camping, backcountry travel, or related fieldwork
Preferred
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather types while doing demanding labor with hand and power tools
- Function as part of a team with the ability to get along with members of all backgrounds and experience levels
- Strong service ethic and commitment to completing an entire term of service with a desire to serve the community and the environment
- Crew Leaders Only:
- Ability to hike 3-12 miles per day in rugged terrain, often wearing a 45lb backpack and carrying tools
