ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Founded in 1975, American YouthWorks connects young people with access to educational and career opportunities, and support services through Conservation Corps programs in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma, and YouthBuild programs in Austin and Taylor, TX. In a supportive learning environment, participants learn new job skills by addressing urgent community issues such as building micro homes for shelterless individuals, disaster response through FEMA deployments, environmental resilience, and access to affordable housing and healthcare. AYW programs are award-winning models that welcome youth and young adults from local communities, offering connections to innovative education and career training that can lead to meaningful employment and career opportunities.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Are you interested in pursuing a career path in wildland firefighting and natural resource management? Texas Conservation Corps (TXCC), a program of American YouthWorks, partnering with the US Forest Service Southern Region, has AmeriCorps positions available offering extensive training and certifications in wildland firefighting and natural resource management. Crews will spend their season completing a variety of fire response activities, prescribed burns, conservation projects, and cyclical maintenance objectives on US Forest Service National Forests and Grasslands of Texas sites.
Locations: New Waverly/Huntsville and Zavalla/Lufkin regions (Texas)

JOB DUTIES
Crew Leaders are selected based on previous leadership and relevant experience and have the added responsibility of:
- guiding crews through their day to day field activities
- providing guidance to crew members including reflection, conflict resolution, and technical training
- communicating with partners, contractors, program staff, site supervisors, volunteers, and other members to ensure the execution of a quality program and quality projects
- serve as the program trained driver
REQUIREMENTS
- High School diploma or GED
- Between the ages of 18-28 and up to 35 for veterans
- US Citizenship or Lawful Permanent US Resident
- Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check
- Ability to pass the Arduous Work Capacity test (walk 3 miles in 45 minutes carrying 45 lbs)
- Ability to hike 3-10 mi/day in rugged terrain while carrying tools
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather types while doing hard, often repetitive, labor with hand & power tools
- Ability and interest to work with a diverse group of people
- Commitment to complete the entire term of service
- Crew Leaders ONLY: Previous leadership and relevant experience
