ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Founded in 1975, American YouthWorks (AYW) connects young adults to education, paid career training, and support services through Conservation Corps programs in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, and YouthBuild Pre-Apprenticeship programs in Austin and Taylor, TX. In a supportive learning environment, participants learn in-demand job skills while addressing critical community needs—disaster response through FEMA deployments, wildfire prevention and hazardous fuel reduction, public land and infrastructure maintenance, and access to affordable housing and healthcare. Our nationally recognized, award-winning programs welcome young adults from local communities and provide innovative pathways to meaningful employment and career success.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Are you interested in getting paid to spend your summer outdoors building conservation skills immersed in environmental education? Gain experience in habitat restoration, native plant/soil identification, invasive species management, and trail projects with opportunities to explore Texas with our Summer Youth Programs! The Texas Conservation Corps (TXCC) is an AmeriCorps service program of American YouthWorks and is a nationally recognized job training nonprofit headquartered in Austin, Texas. Each year the program engages over 100 diverse youth and college-aged young adults in critical, hands-on conservation and disaster service projects, giving participants the skills and opportunities to solve real life community and environmental problems. The TXCC experience builds leadership skills, connection with community, and prepares young people with skills needed to enter the workforce with a strong work ethic and sense of service!
Summer Youth Crews (SYC):
Spend your summer getting paid to build conservation skills and engage in environmental education. The Texas Conservation Corps’ Summer Youth Program is an AmeriCorps opportunity for young adults to work with a crew on habitat restoration projects throughout the Houston or Austin area in Texas.
These crews are open to current high school students, recent high school graduates, college students and young adults looking to spend a summer working on conservation projects throughout Texas. Led by two adult crew leaders, members will work on trail improvement and habitat restoration projects, and will engage in environmental education. Opportunities for travel and camping will be provided. All experiences, skill levels, and backgrounds are welcome to apply!
Looking for more than an 8-week experience? Summer enrollments can extend to longer terms!

Qualifications and AmeriCorps Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED (Crew Leaders ONLY)
- Not required for Summer Youth Crew Members
- US Citizenship or lawful permanent US Resident
- Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check (ages 18+)
- Between the ages of 17-28 (Crew Members), 21-35 (Crew Leaders)
- Summer Youth Crew Members ONLY: Ages under 18 requires parent/guardian consent
