ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The mission of Palmetto Conservation Foundation is to conserve South Carolina’s natural and cultural resources, preserve historic landmarks, and promote active outdoor recreation on the Palmetto Trail and other greenways. Under that mission, establishing the first trail based conservation corps stationed out of South Carolina was a very natural alignment. The vision of the Palmetto Conservation Corps is to create sustainable communities while conserving South Carolina’s natural resources. The Corps develops the conservation leaders of tomorrow through service and education, strengthens partnerships that address environmental challenges, and cultivates civically-engaged citizens.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Crew members live and serve outdoors as part of an 8 person crew completing various conservation projects throughout South Carolina. Crew members are trained to use a variety of hand tools to complete projects, which include trail building , trail repair, invasive species removal, re-vegetation, riparian zone restoration, and more. Crew members must be willing to work hard, maintain positive attitudes with atypical service days, and work well as part of a team. Daily tasks include but are not limited to, trail building and maintenance, invasive species mitigation, erosion control, tool maintenance, carrying heavy equipment into project sites, hiking long distances into project sites, camping during hitch projects, environmental education, disaster response, communicating with the program director, and other duties as assigned.
JOB DUTIES
Essential Functions
Unless previously completed with current certifications, attend and successfully complete the following trainings: Trail training; Wilderness First Aid; Chainsaw operations: Adopt a Stream
Participate in all aspects of trail construction and improvement as a member of the Trail Corps. This includes, but is not limited to: vegetation clearing and removal: sculpting natural surface trails; and construction of trail features such as boardwalks; bridges, and stairs.
Participate in maintenance of tools, equipment and vehicles.
Participate in periodic professional development sessions with the Palmetto Trail staff.
Participate in September 11th Day of Remembrance and/or Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, events may occur on the weekend of during holiday and include activities outside of the scope of typical day-to-day functions.
AmeriCorps members do not perform any prohibited activities as enumerated by the federal AmeriCorps agency 45 CFR 2520.65.
AmeriCorps resources must not supplant, duplicate, nor replace. Restrictions are outlined in 45 CFR 2540.100.
Participate in outside service activities approved by the Program Director.
Contribute towards community preparedness and respond to disaster relief.
REQUIREMENTS
Be at least 18 years of age.
Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.
Satisfy the National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria to 45 CFR 2540.202.
High school diploma or GED
Passion for building and improving trails in South Carolina.
Positive attitude and desire to work as a team.
Posses a driver’s license or Government identification.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS
The Palmetto Conservation Corps members will receive training, certifications, and hands on experience in the trail building profession. They will have the opportunity to grow personally and professionally as part of a team of enthusiastic AmeriCorps members and the broader Palmetto Trail and Upstate Greenways and Trails Alliance communities. At the completion of term of service members are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award.
