ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Founded in 1975, American YouthWorks connects young people with equitable access to educational and career opportunities, and support services through the Texas Conservation Corps, Louisiana Conservation Corps, Arkansas Conservation Corps, and YouthBuild Austin programs. In a supportive learning environment, participants learn new job skills by addressing urgent community issues such as building micro homes for shelterless individuals, disaster response through FEMA deployments, environmental resilience, and access to affordable housing and healthcare. AYW programs are award-winning models that welcome youth and young adults from diverse backgrounds, offering connection to innovative education and career training that can lead to meaningful employment and career opportunities.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Searching for an opportunity to gain conservation experience and explore the outdoors with a focus in gulf and coastal restoration?
The American YouthWorks – Louisiana Conservation Corps (AYW LaCC) is looking to fill GulfCorps Crew Leader and Member openings for the 2024-2025 term year!
The GulfCorps program is based out of Baton Rouge, LA and aims to empower young people through conservation, education, service, and job training. Participants engage in hands-on projects on public lands, coastal regions, and occasionally in disaster areas.
The Texas and Louisiana Conservation Corps of American YouthWorks (TXCC and LaCC) are a part of the GulfCorps Initiative – For the upcoming season we are looking for dedicated young adults to work with us! TXCC and LaCC provide our members with hands-on opportunities, extensive training in conservation and coastal restoration, and the freedom to develop personally and professionally.
In this program the primary focus is gulf and coastal restoration with the potential to conduct prescribed burns. Crews will receive training and education on how prescribed burns impact the environment with Wildland Fire Trainings. There are also structured professional development for future career expansion and exploration after the gulf corps program!

COMPENSATION: $2,400-$2,720 per month + End-of-Service AmeriCorps Education Award

Crew Leaders & Crew Members: October/November 2024 – May/June 2025

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Frequently required to walk and hike over long distances while carrying tools
- Ability to operate tools
- Heavy lifting, bending, and carrying up to 35-50* pounds (*depending on crew type)
- Walking and working on steep or uneven terrain
- Ability to work long days in adverse weather conditions
- Depending on crew type, ability to hitch, camp, and travel throughout the duration of an entire AmeriCorps term
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED
- Between the ages of 18-28; Ages 21+ for Crew Leaders
- US Citizenship or lawful permanent US Resident
- Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check (NSCHC)
- Additional experience and qualifications for Crew Leaders
- Clean 3-year Driving Record
- 3-5 months of previous conservation experience (ex: chainsaws, habitat restoration, invasive species removal, trail work)
