ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Founded in 1975, American YouthWorks connects young people with access to educational and career opportunities, and support services through Conservation Corps programs in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma, and YouthBuild programs in Austin and Taylor, TX. In a supportive learning environment, participants learn new job skills by addressing urgent community issues such as building micro homes for shelterless individuals, disaster response through FEMA deployments, environmental resilience, and access to affordable housing and healthcare. AYW programs are award-winning models that welcome youth and young adults from local communities, offering connections to innovative education and career training that can lead to meaningful employment and career opportunities.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
📢 Are you looking to gain experience in disaster mitigation, habitat restoration, trail projects, and disaster relief? The Louisiana Conservation Corps (LaCC) has crew openings starting January 11 and January 16 in 2023 for crew positions based in Baton Rouge, LA!
These crews are focused on conservation projects in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana. These members complete habitat restoration and trail projects with a variety of partners, from the National Park Service to state and county parks.
Though most of the season will consist of conservation projects; these crews remain on-call and able to deploy should a flood, fire, hurricane, or other disasters occur. The conservation corps of American YouthWorks are a state and federal resource during disasters. Crew leaders receive training in spontaneous volunteer management, donations management, and the Incident Command System. Common partners include FEMA and the Texas Department of Emergency Management.

JOB DUTIES
🍃 LaCC’s Conservation & Disaster Crews are an AmeriCorps opportunity for people interested in working outdoors. All experiences and backgrounds are welcome
🍃 Crews will spend their season completing a variety of conservation projects throughout the region. Projects can include trail construction & improvement, habitat restoration, invasive plant removal, wildland fuel reduction, and more!
📍 Crews remain on call to help communities impacted by natural disasters
REQUIREMENTS
- Between the ages of 18-35
- High school diploma or GED
- US Citizenship or lawful permanent US Resident
- Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check
- Ability to hike 3-12 miles per day in rugged terrain, often wearing a 45lb backpack and carrying tools.
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds repeatedly and use hand and power tools
