ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) provides youth, young adults, and veterans with structured, safe and challenging service and educational opportunities through projects that promote personal growth, the development of social skills, and an ethic of natural resource stewardship. The Southwest Conservation Corps program model incorporates guiding principles of experiential learning, respect, openness and willingness, commitment, responsibility, pride, excellence, health, safety, and fun. SCC is a program of Conservation Legacy that was founded in 1998 to continue the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s. Southwest Conservation Corps offers programs year-round based in regional offices located in Durango and Salida, CO. SCC operates a continuum of programs from community-based initiatives for teens to backcountry camping crews for high school and college aged individuals along with leadership programs for college graduates and job training programs specifically for current era veterans. Programs are completed in partnership with public land agency managers and most are AmeriCorps programs.

About the Position:
- As wildfires become more common across the American west, Southwest Conservations Corps’ Chainsaw crew provides the opportunity to engage in the important work of fuel mitigation work here in Colorado. On this crew, member will go through chainsaw training to earn their U.S. Forest Service chainsaw certification and complete projects that can include felling, brushing, and/or limbing all in the name of fire mitigation work.

- Your crew will consist of 6 to 8 members and 2 leaders. Crews live and serve primarily in front country (access to your crew vehicle and trailer) locations but could also occasionally serve in backcountry (hiking all your supplies in with backpacks) locations, in all types of weather conditions for 8 days at a time. During those 8-days, crews will be camping and cooking together. In this position, you will be a member of the crew; perform heavy manual labor, and complete conservation and wildfire mitigation projects using a variety of manual and power tools. You will a participate in environmental education activities. Risk management is of utmost importance, and all procedures must be followed at all times.
- Projects include hazardous fuels reduction, corridor clearing, habitat restoration and fencing, re-vegetation and local environmental service projects. Crews may also complete technical and/or specialized projects depending on project partner needs, including disaster relief if the opportunity arises.
- Schedules generally are 8-days on and 6 off. There is a possibility you could serve 5-days on and 2-days off, or a variation of schedules requiring all AmeriCorps crew members to show flexibility. SCC does not provide housing on your off days.
- All crews will go through a 5-day (unpaid) volunteer orientation (May 27th – May 31st, 2024). This will include Wilderness First Aid training. Food and space to camp is provided for this training.
JOB DUTIES
Participant and Expedition Behavior:
- Serve effectively as a member of a team despite potentially stressful and difficult conditions
- Willingness and ability to complete all aspects of the program
- Contribute to a safe learning environment; no harassment of any kind
- Appropriately represent SCC and AmeriCorps to the public and project partners at all time
Risk Management and Judgement:
- Effectively follow directions by others, so that you will be able to successfully manage hazards
- Ask clarifying question when you do not understand a task
- Maintain focus during the day, both while traveling and serving in varied weather conditions.
- If taking prescription medications, participants must be able to maintain proper dosage without assistance from others.
Environmental Ethics & Outdoor Skills:
- Learn and safely perform fundamental outdoor living and skills as appropriate to the project.
- Live in a physically demanding, possibly remote environment for an uninterrupted period of up to several weeks
Substance Free:
- In accordance with a drug free program, alcohol and drugs are prohibited while participating in AmeriCorps and SCC activities, and while on organization property.
REQUIREMENTS
General Qualifications:
- To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 30
- Must be a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Color) community member
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 lbs
- A US citizen that has received (or on track to receive) a high school diploma or GED
- All offers of service are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS
Benefits: $2,626.27 675-hr AmeriCorps Education Award (Value may change depending on term of service), Food provided while in the field, uniform shirts, personal protective equipment. USFS recognized Chainsaw, Wilderness First Aid & CPR/AED certification.
