Since 1984, Northwest Youth Corps has been providing opportunities for youth and young adults to learn, grow, and experience success. Our programs focus on education, challenge, community, leadership and empowerment, and typically include epic outdoor experiences in some of the most wild and scenic places on Earth. Our suite of programs have something to offer both a teenager looking for their first summer work experience and a recent college grad needing specific certifications to land their dream job. We partner with land management agencies and like-minded non-profits across the west to complete high priority conservation projects designed to improve the lands and communities in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Lewis and Clark National Historical Park is recruiting for one Facilities Maintenance Intern beginning in July 2024 until October 2024. With seven sites on both sides of the Columbia River in Washington and Oregon, the park includes 6 buildings and maintain roughly 20 linear miles of trails, parking lots and roadways. While working with the park’s Facilities Maintenance Division, the members will primarily be assisting with buildings, trails and log preservation projects and operations.
Duty Location: The intern will report to the Maintenance Division in the Fort Clatsop Unit of Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, 92381 Fort Clatsop Road in Astoria, OR. There is no housing available at the park.
Terms of Employment: The Intern will complete a 480-hour term of service, starting in July 2024 and through October 2024. Starting date is negotiable to accommodate student schedules. The member must complete a minimum of 480 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards total service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total hours.
JOB DUTIES
Performs all aspects of trail maintenance and construction as assigned by the trails maintenance work leader, or designee. Examples of the work performed include: clears brush and fallen logs from trail corridor; cleans, repairs, and constructs log or rock drains; installs log or rock retainer bars/steps and checks and/or constructs foot and stock bridges from native materials; constructs and maintains trail structures such as turnpikes, causeways, cribbing trail tread, riprap and rock retaining walls; constructs new segments of trail; and performs rehabilitation and meadow restoration on abandoned or heavily impacted sections of trail. Uses shovels, picks, rakes, axes, pulaskis, various types of saws (e.g., McLeod’s crosscut, pole, bow, etc.), loppers, chisels, sledgehammers, single jacks, rock bars, draw knives, measuring tapes, levels, squares, scribes, gasoline-powered jackhammers and rock drills, chainsaws, and other trade tools when performing trail maintenance and construction duties. Maintains the tools and equipment used in safe operating condition. The work performed involves very heavy physical labor in the maintenance and construction of the park unit’s trail system. In accomplishing this work the incumbent will utilize common hand tools and/or power equipment. Ensures work is performed safely and within prescribed NPS standards. May assist with other park crews and/or projects on an irregular basis
REQUIREMENTS
Required Qualifications:
- Ability to work outdoors, hike, and work in inclement weather across uneven terrain
- Willingness to work as part of a team in an outdoor setting
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Responsible for caring for and maintaining equipment and working tools
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs and up to 150lbs with assistance
- Current driver’s license, a clean driving record, and personal transportation
- A positive attitude and well-driven
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of basic hand tools and gas-powered motors/equipment
- Basic knowledge of one or all of the following: carpentry, groundskeeping, plumbing, and electrical.
