ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Since 1984, Northwest Youth Corps has been providing opportunities for youth and young adults to learn, grow, and experience success. Our programs focus on education, challenge, community, leadership and empowerment, and typically include epic outdoor experiences in some of the most wild and scenic places on Earth. Our suite of programs have something to offer both a teenager looking for their first summer work experience and a recent college grad needing specific certifications to land their dream job. We partner with land management agencies and like-minded non-profits across the west to complete high priority conservation projects designed to improve the lands and communities in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is recruiting 1 (one) Interpretation and Education AmeriCorps Members beginning in May/June 2025 and serving through September/October 2025 (16 weeks). The members will be trained in interpretation skills and will work at the visitor center answering visitors’ questions about the park’s geology and paleontology. The members will also help guests plan their visits to the three site units and encourage safe discoveries and experiences during their stay. Other duties will be roving to the other park sights to answer questions in the field, assisting with bookstore operations, and general upkeep of the facilities.
JOB DUTIES
Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Visitor Center Operations (65%)
- Duties include general orientation and information for visitors, assisting with the Junior Ranger program as well as providing interpretive pop-up/patio talks
- Roving/Outreach (15%)
- Duties include on-site and virtual programming assistance.
- Classroom and Training (15%)
- Social Media Content Creation (5%)
- Duties include producing posts, video clips, etc.
REQUIREMENTS
Required Qualifications:
- Ages 18-30 (up to 35 for veterans)
- U.S. Citizen or lawful, permanent resident
- Must pass a background/driver check
- Ability to work outdoors in remote settings during high temperatures, wind and on uneven ground.
- Willingness to work as part of a positive and collaborative team.
- Public speaking skills, high quality customer service skills, and IT skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
- Current valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- A passion for sharing the park and its resources with the public
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience in presenting informational or educational talks to the public.
- Experience teaching and/or leading youth, conservation, reforestation and/or outdoor rec skills.
- Ability to absorb and apply a great deal of information quickly and accurately.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (16 weeks), starting May/June 2025 through October/September 2025. The member must complete a minimum of 450 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.
