ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Founded in 1975, American YouthWorks (AYW) connects young adults to education, paid career training, and support services through Conservation Corps programs in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, and YouthBuild Pre-Apprenticeship programs in Austin and Taylor, TX. In a supportive learning environment, participants learn in-demand job skills while addressing critical community needs—disaster response through FEMA deployments, wildfire prevention and hazardous fuel reduction, public land and infrastructure maintenance, and access to affordable housing and healthcare. Our nationally recognized, award-winning programs welcome young adults from local communities and provide innovative pathways to meaningful employment and career success.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Interested in pursuing wildland firefighting and natural resource management? Apply for Integrated Resource and Fire Crew (IRFC)! On one of TXCC’s IRFC Crews, you will:
- Prepare and implement prescribed fires
- Construct and maintain trails on US Forest Service lands
- Remove invasive and exotic plant species from parks and public lands, including chainsaw removal of trees
- Serve on a crew of 3-5 other AmeriCorps members to complete projects on public lands
- Maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment including chainsaws, power tools, and hand tools
✅ Ability to pass the Arduous Work Capacity Pack test (walk 3 miles in 45 minutes carrying 45 lbs) is required to complete the IRFC program
🤝 Both Crew Leader and Crew Member positions are available.
👉 Crew Leaders are selected based on previous leadership + relevant experience and have the added responsibility of guiding crews through their day to day field activities.
TERM LENGTH: November 2023 – April 2024 (~5 month term)

⚒ Term length: 675 hour AmeriCorps term
⚒ Public Land Corps Non-Competitive Hiring Eligibility for jobs on Federal Lands
⚒ Opportunity to obtain S130 Firefighter Training / S190 Intro to Wildland Fire Behavior (allows participants to work in Wildland Fire Jobs after service)
