Training Dates: 4/13/24 – 4/23/24 (paid mandatory training)
Program: 4/29/24 – 8/10/24
Location (City and State): Ely, MN
Primary Responsibilities:
The Boundary Waters Wilderness Native Plant Corps Team main tasks are to update the existing non-native invasive plant (NNIP) inventory for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) and treat priority infestations. This position involves using herbicide. The crew will be camping at back country sites during work days and will be based out of Ely, MN, on their off days. The team’s work trips may follow a schedule of 8, 10-hour days in the wilderness, followed by 6 days off. The work will involve paddling and portaging along a series of lakes, and stopping along the way at campsites and portages and performing invasive plant inventory and management at these locations.
The crew will also conduct public education along the way since they will encounter BWCAW visitors at many of the treatment sites. Invasive plants will be managed using a combination of hand tools/pulling and herbicides. Inventory and treatment information will be collected in the Field Maps app on a mobile device. The crew will check in daily via radio and Garmin in Reach to ensure safe operations.
