EPCAMR’s purpose and mission is to reclaim abandoned mine lands, assess rivers and streams impacted by legacy abandoned mine drainage (AMD) water pollution, support the redevelopment of abandoned mine lands for economic development, restore watersheds through implementation projects once funding is secured through partnership opportunities, and provide environmental education and outreach opportunities to underserved coalfield communities throughout the Northcentral Bituminous and Northeastern PA’s Anthracite Coal Regions. Communities and watersheds that EPCAMR works in have lands that were abandoned just prior to enactment of the Surface Mining Control & Reclamation Act of 1977. EPCAMR has completed nearly 3 decades worth of work in the Northern Appalachian Mountains and the entire Anthracite Coal Region that consists of a 484 sq. mile area of 4 major coalfields.
