ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Appalachian Conservation Corps (ACC) is a corps program based in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The ACC moves forward from the tradition of the Civilian Conservation Corps to engage young people in conservation service projects. The ACC is a Conservation Legacy program. The ACC strives to cultivate a new generation of local land stewards. We partner with land managers to accomplish impactful and lasting conservation service projects. We work to build and support sustainable public access, historical interpretation and ecological health. The ACC runs as a fee-for-service crew and we are willing to collaborate with land managers to find project funding.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
This placement is based at Friends of the Rappahannock who has multiple offices across an 18 County region. The primary office will be at the George Washington Carver Agricultural Research Center in Culpeper County, but will involve travel throughout the Rappahannock River Watershed. Much of the work will take place on private land.
Position Summary:
The primary purpose of this position is to perform site assessments and develop maintenance plans for riparian forest buffers and other tree planting best management practices, as a part of the ACC Watersheds Corps. This intern will create a work plan for a follow up planting crew in the fall. These buffers were planted 3-15 years ago through state and federal conservation programs as well as privately funded grant programs. Assessments include visual observation of invasive plant species, live dead counts, and light tree shelter maintenance at the sites. The position will serve as an Americorps member with ACC but will also be working closely with Friends of the Rappahannock, Virginia Department of Forestry, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Soil and Water Conservation District and other partners from the Rappahannock River Roundtable. ACC and FOR will provide the Assistant access to one vehicle, laptop, cell phone, and supplies needed for assessments.
This seasonal opportunity is a perfect match for students or individuals wanting to learn about natural resource management, work with private and public landowners, connect with a broad partnership of conservation professionals, and get their hands dirty while improving the landscape for water quality, wildlife habitat, and human communities. Note that it will include a lot of driving, possibly working in extreme weather conditions and traversing difficult terrain. This position will receive on the ground training in plant identification and buffer maintenance and assessment by ACC and partner staff. Interns will cover the Rappahannock River Watershed and may make occasional day trips to Shenandoah and Page Counties.
Housing is NOT provided.
