ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Co-founded in 1998 by two PhD students, Jerry Keir and Sanjay Pyare, at the University of Nevada, the Institute began as a field studies program to mobilize University faculty, students, and volunteers in applied science and direct service to support national parks, forests, open spaces and public lands. Since then, for over two decades, GBI has supported over 7,000 conservationist serving hundreds of projects to realize positive environmental change across the western US. GBI has raised over 165MM for research, education, and service, making impactful contributions to serving the public and our public lands. GBI is based out of Reno, Nevada, with Satellite offices in Las Vegas, Nevada and South Lake Tahoe, CA. GBI is the recipient of the 2015 USFS’s “Regional Forester Award,” the Nevada Governor’s Points of Light Award in 2005 and was named “Outstanding Non-government Organization” by Environmental Leadership in 2001.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Great Basin Institute (GBI) seeks to hire an Assistant Project Archivist to join the Research Associate (RA) Program and work cooperatively with the National Park Service’s Yellowstone National Park (YELL) staff in support of the Park’s museum and archives program. The primary role of the Assistant Project Archivist position is assisting in the processing, digitization, and access of archives and manuscript collections. The primary duties of the position will be to assist with the arrangement, description, preservation, processing, and access of the archival and manuscript collections. This position will also perform preservation reformatting of legacy media and electronic records and the digitization for access of selected materials. Additional archives work may include implementing preventative preservation; assisting with onsite and distance reference requests; and participating in outreach activities. Yellowstone National Park (YELL), the world’s first national park, is located in the Rocky Mountains, where temperatures vary from an average of 75 degrees in the summer to below freezing at other times, and features unique geologic wonders, iconic wildlife, and exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities. This position will be duty stationed at Gardiner, Montana, which is situated at the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park, and offers many community facilities, such as grocery stores, K-12 school and day care, a drugstore, motels, and restaurants, and is just 5 miles north of park headquarters at Mammoth Hot Springs, WY. All other services are available within 55 to 75 miles from Mammoth. Medical clinics are available in Mammoth (year-round) and seasonally (summer) at Lake and Old Faithful. JOB DUTIES
Specific position duties include, but are not limited to:
- Implement processing plans to arrange materials in logical groupings or incorporate addenda into existing series, revise and update descriptions, and create container lists following professional standards, agency guidelines, and institutional best practices.
- Conduct basic preservation such as such as rehousing, humidification, and encapsulation.
- Input descriptive data in Interior Collection Management System (ICMS) and update narrative findings aids.
- Perform in-house digitization including, preparation, scanning, editing, and metadata development.
- Assist with onsite and distance reference requests, including staffing reference desk and monitoring researchers, researching and answering specific queries, and assisting researchers to locate relevant materials.
- Assist with outreach activities such as leading public tours and writing social media posts.
- Participate in team meetings, provide status updates and project data, as needed.

The successful applicant must complete a Department of Interior Background Investigation or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning this position. |
