Intro to Strategic Science Communication

April 9 from 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. EDT

Session Description:

Grounded in the latest research on science communication, this interactive workshop will explore how to build  meaningful connections while communicating about science topics. Whether you’re preparing Corps members for projects, collaborating with community partners, or just explaining what you do to a stranger, this workshop will help you communicate more clearly, compellingly, and compassionately with anyone you meet.

In this 90-minute interactive workshop, COMPASS facilitators will share key concepts for strategic science communication, and introduce the Message Box, COMPASS’s fundamental tool for breaking down complex topics into memorable messages. Each participant will develop their own Message Box, for ongoing reference and repeated use as they continue to communicate about their work. Our workshops keep things moving and engagement high through a combination of facilitated group discussion; brief, relevant and interesting content presentation; and meaningful activities.

Key Learning Objectives:

  1. A stronger understanding of the science behind effective communication
  2. Experience using the Message Box, COMPASS’s fundamental tool for breaking down complex topics into digestible, effective messages
  3. Practice  collaboratively drafting a Message Box
