“Sandra’s time in the CCC is notable for the sheer number of trainings she has completed and the grit she brings to each new challenge.”

Sandra Paola Hernandez Jacinto is known for her spirit and drive. She joined the California Conservation Corps (CCC) with little experience and through perseverance and hard work, achievedlead positions. Sandra’s dream is to become an emergency dispatcher, and she hoped that through joining CCC she could serve as a wildland firefighter and gain the needed experience. When her first attempt to join a fire crew fell short, Sandra didn’t give up, she dug in. In her own words, “Instead of giving up, I chose to keep moving forward.”
Before joining the CCC, Sandra worked as a manager at McDonalds while finishing an associate’s degree in criminology. After learning about CCC from a co-worker, she decided to try it out and see if it could be an avenue to pursue her dream of becoming an emergency dispatcher. Sandra shared, “After learning about the CCC, I realized I had nothing to lose and everything to gain.” The path forward proved to be more challenging than expected, but also more rewarding. Her Corps experience enabled Sandra to gain not only valuable hard skills and certifications, but also an inner drive and perseverance to achieve what she’d set her mind to.
During her first year in the CCC, Sandra had one goal: to become a dispatcher. Unfortunately, she didn’t initially have the mental or physical strength to join a fire crew like she’d hoped. Instead, Sandra joined a resource crew where she was able to push herself out of her comfort zone and experience immense personal growth. Sandra performed natural resource conservation projects, earned certifications in conservation, chainsaw, Emergency Medical/Fire Dispatcher, and more. After a year with the resource crew, Sandra tried out for the fire crew again. This time, Sandra joined the fire crew and became a lead sawyer. Now, as her second year is coming to an end, Sandra is among the most accomplished Corpsmembers in the CCC. Being on the fire crew has taught Sanda how to remain calm when things go wrong, how to communicate with different people, how to lead by example, and how to manage her stress. She shared, “CC has helped me find my voice, my confidence, and my purpose.”
In the future, Sandra now hopes to pursue a career as a CAL FIRE dispatcher. She wishes to support her community and build a stable future for herself. Sandra wishes to serve as an example for other young women hoping to enter the male dominated fire and show that women are capable of anything. Sandra is also planning to use her AmeriCorps Education Award to finish her associate’s degree in criminology – not because she needs it for her career path – but because she deeply values education.
Sandra is a testament to how through being willing to take on a challenge and not give up, you can achieve your dreams. She said, “The CCC taught me that I am stronger than I look, tougher than I think, and capable of far more than I ever imagined.”
