“We need passionate Corps advocates to explain to young people how meaningful and life changing service in the Corps can be. Joining a Corps allows you to build skills and earn certifications, try new things, meet new people and walk through many open doors that you didn’t know existed.”
Thomas Kauffman’s journey with Civicorps is an inspiring example of resilience, growth, and leadership. Before joining Civicorps, Thomas navigated a series of retail jobs, struggling to find a fulfilling career path. His life took a transformative turn in 2022 when he joined Civicorps, an opportunity that he initially approached with hesitance but later embraced wholeheartedly. This experience transformed him into a role model for his peers and an advocate for conservation and youth development. Thomas stood out for his impeccable attendance, positive attitude, and readiness to help wherever needed. Within six months, he earned a place in the prestigious Conservation Crew Leader Academy, signaling the beginning of his leadership trajectory.
As a Crew Leader, Thomas excelled in roles requiring discipline, technical skill, and interpersonal acumen. Operating primarily out of Civicorps’ Pittsburg job training site, he played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of its crew. His dedication earned him multiple certifications, including Wilderness First Aid, Stop the Bleed, and the S-212 Basic Chainsaw certification. His leadership qualities further shone when he attained the Crew Leader II status, a position reserved for exceptional individuals capable of leading teams independently.
Beyond his contributions in conservation, Thomas demonstrated remarkable communications skills while participating in a Video and Social Media workshop. This experience led to his appointment as Civicorps’ inaugural part-time Video Intern, where his creative storytelling brought the organization’s mission to life on social media. One of his videos achieved record engagement on Civicorps’ Instagram channel in 2023, reflecting his passion for Corps and talent in communications.
Thomas’s influence extends far beyond his immediate responsibilities. His role on Civicorps’ Appeal Panel allowed him to contribute to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for his peers. His empathy and fairness in addressing appeals highlighted his commitment to justice and community service. Additionally, his willingness to share his knowledge and inspire others underscores his dedication to lifting those around him. In 2024, Thomas’s perseverance culminated in a new milestone: a year-long Facilities Maintenance Internship at Mt. Diablo State Park, facilitated by a partnership between Civicorps and the California State Parks Foundation. This internship not only broadened his technical skills, including building maintenance and infrastructure repair, but also fostered his growth in maturity and independence.
Thomas’s journey is a shining example of the transformative power of Civicorps and the Corps experience. His story exemplifies how determination, openness to learning, and a supportive community can help young adults achieve their potential. As he looks to the future, Thomas aspires to become a park ranger or a drone operator for firefighting and search-and-rescue operations. He also dreams of advocating for Corps programs nationwide, ensuring that more young people are aware of the opportunities that helped shape his own path in national service.
