“I feel that I am more of a leader now. I have had the opportunity to lead teams and projects and speak to other young people my age. I would not have had all these opportunities if not for Greater Miami Service Corps.”
Enocch Marshall exemplifies the transformative power a Corps experience can have on today’s young people. Enocch is an AmeriCorps – Opportunity Youth Service Initiative member serving with Greater Miami Service Corps (GMSC) since 2021. Since joining, he has achieved his high school diploma and numerous certifications and personal milestones. Today, Enocch is working toward becoming an airplane mechanic and attributes his ambition and career path to his Corps experience.
Before joining GMSC, Enocch did not have much direction in his life. He had left high school and was not engaged in any other activities. He wanted a way to make money to help out in his home. He also wanted to earn his high school diploma. After his brother Jordan had a successful experience with GMSC, Enocch decided to sign up. He quickly found his place within the Corps, and stepped up as a leader, “Enocch has often been the encouraging voice that motivates and uplifts those around him.”
Enocch has remained resilient throughout his Corps experience. He achieved his high school diploma, earned Plumber 1 pre-apprenticeship credential, CPR/First Aid Certificate, OSHA 10 credentials, and even trained as an Energy Coach to provide vital services to seniors. Enocch says that he learned the importance of giving back to his community and enjoyed painting senior’s homes and providing energy efficiency services.
Unfortunately, the road has not been easy. During his service term, Enocch’s mother passed away and he navigated a tumultuous household environment that resulted in him ultimately being unhoused. These challenges fueled Enocch’s commitment to personal growth and community support. He has grown into a leader who empathizes with, and encourages, his fellow Corpsmembers. His Corps says, “Enocch’s ability to overcome adversity is a testament to his strength of character and determination.”
Enocch says that one of the most important opportunities he had was being connected with Barrington Irving Technical Training School (BITTS), where he is currently studying to become an airplane mechanic. Enocch is set to complete his training in December and has already landed a job at the Opa-Locka Airport. He plans to continue learning more about the aviation industry as he continues down his career path.
Enocch cares deeply about his fellow Corpsmembers. His experience being unhoused has opened his eyes to the housing needs of many young people today. He believes that while Corps programing can help direct young people onto a career path, providing a housing solution for those Corpsmembers could make a lasting and impactful difference. Enocch is truly a role model for any young person looking to transform their life and pursue their dreams.
