“Aniya is a beacon of light and positivity.”
Aniya Dietzman is in her second term as an AmeriCorps member with Operation Fresh Start (OFS). She began her Corps journey in 2023 looking to complete her high school diploma. Over a year later, Aniya has taken advantage of every opportunity that has come her way and has uncovered a passion for wildlife conservation. As a result, Aniya plans to attend college in the fall of 2025. Her Corps experience has ignited an excitement for learning in a way she has never experienced in traditional school.
Before joining OFS, Aniya did not have much direction and after leaving high school was mostly home. She had struggled with virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and was seeking a hands-on learning style. OFS offered the solution – the ability to achieve her diploma while also learning new skills in a hands-on based model. She was also attracted to the numerous certifications she could and would pursue.
Aniya took full advantage of every opportunity offered her. She earned her high school diploma, drivers permit, earned a pre-apprenticeship in urban forestry, and more. Most impactful to Aniya was a new internship opportunity in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin’s Russel Labs working as a Research Assistant. Her internship was the result of a training day where Corpsmembers participated in an owl dissection. Aniya impressed the research team so much that she was offered an internship. As part of her internship, Aniya works at the University of Wisconsin Zoology Museum once per week to learn about how scientific museums function. She has also had the opportunity to dissect bats, opossums, and even snow leopards for scientific research. OFS notes that Aniya always has a smile on her face. Despite cold winters and hot buggy summers, Aniya consistently models a positive attitude and an excitement for learning.
Currently Aniya is continuing as a research assistant and will be extending the internship through the spring semester. She was also offered a full-time role on the research team for the summer of 2025. Aniya is planning to use her AmeriCorps Education Award to go to school to become a veterinary technician and to further pursue an interest in the culinary arts. She hopes to continue working with animals long into the future.
Aniya is a great example of the ways that Corps can open doors for young people. She believes that today’s youth lack exposure to the wide breadth of career opportunities available to them, and thinks Corps could be the solution. Before OFS, Aniya thought she wanted to work in a kitchen. She had no idea that scientific research or working with animals was something that would be available to her, or even something she would enjoy. She is grateful for her OFS experience and says, “I think that [diversity of experiences] is especially important for younger Corpsmembers who are still trying to figure out their place in the professional world.”
