Washington, DC – October 10, 2014 – After a hugely successful coast-to-coast rollout, The Waders in the Water program has added an online delivery option making it both available and affordable to more Corps Network members. The material, the instruction, and the opportunities remain the same. The only change is students will receive the same groundbreaking training and certification for climate-ready aquatic restoration via real-time webinars. Participants will emerge with the same skills in aquatic safety, knowledgeable about installation techniques, and ready to provide business and government with reliable restoration for streams, rivers and wetlands across the U.S.
This 21st Century delivery method is perfectly suited to support the goals of the 21st Century Conservation Service Corps’ (21 CSC) effort to put 100,000 young people and veterans a year to work nationwide protecting, restoring, and enhancing America’s great outdoors. Through the 21CSC, young people and veterans will accomplish meaningful work, and gain important personal and professional job skills while building a lifelong connection to the outdoors.
Drawing on the best traditions of the CCC, The Waders in the Water Green Jobs training and certification was specifically designed by The Corps Network and Trout Headwaters Inc. to enable youth to enter conservation careers by learning how to improve the health, productivity, and climate-resiliency of our streams, rivers, and wetlands. Corps who participated in the Waders in the Water pilot program have reported receiving multiple project offers, one nationwide, based on their newly trained youth workforce.
Corps Network President & CEO Mary Ellen Sprenkel believes “Online delivery of Waders in the Water will further The Corps Network’s goal of developing the next generation conservation workforce, ready to get to work protecting and restoring our precious natural resources.”
Trout Headwaters President Mike Sprague said: “Corp leaders are excited about an online delivery option that will let them train members as needed for almost half the cost, especially after seeing new project opportunities offered to the corps who completed the Waders in the Water pilot programs.”
Corey Tierney, Director of Preservation for Warren County, reflected that “While sitting in on a Waders in the Water training session with our local conservation corps, I was very impressed with how engaged the students were. Not only did they learn the fascinating science and clever techniques which have gone into other successful aquatic restoration projects, but they learned how combining smarts with hard work can have a real and lasting impact – benefiting not just the environment, but often the communities which depend on it. At the end of the day, they were excited to learn that there are good jobs in the conservation field. Their training in aquatic restoration is very encouraging because it gives them yet another marketable skillset, and I look forward to working with them on projects throughout our county.”
