Organization/Program Description :

Western Colorado Conservation Corps was established in 1999 as a program of Mesa Youth Services. Western Colorado Conservation Corps is a non-profit, Americorps-affiliated organization which makes it our mission to serve youth in a conservation-minded service and educational experience. We operate in 4 counties Mesa, Delta, Montrose & Gunnison county. WCCC partners with public land managing agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park Service, Colorado State Parks and Wildlife, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, to provide world-class public land improvement projects for WCCC Corpsmembers.

Position Description :

Corps members camp and serve in the front country and back country of Western Colorado.  Corps members earn a semi-monthly stipend, plus food and lodging when required to camp at project site. Career training takes place primarily in a backcountry setting and involves building and maintaining trails and fences, invasive species removal, and habitat restoration.  Learn to camp, cook, orienteer, and live in a community setting.  Corps members also have the opportunity to earn up to $3,047.50, in addition to a semi-monthly stipend, from an AmeriCorps Education Award (restrictions apply). Member must not engage in any prohibited activities as listed in the AmeriCorps Member Service Agreement

Job Duties :
  • Must be willing and able to camp at least 5 nights per week
  • Successfully complete new Corps Member Orientation and CPR/First Aid Training
  • Complete conservation projects throughout Western Colorado
  • Must be motivated, responsible, and have a positive attitude
  • Willing to cook at camp site when  necessary
  • Must participate in WCCC education program
  • Participate in WCCC wide volunteer events
Requirements :

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting 30-50 lbs
  • Hiking up to 8 miles per day
  • Be willing and able to run a chainsaw and use hand tools after appropriate training
  • Must be able to complete arduous work in adverse weather conditions

Qualifications

No experience necessary! However, you must:

  • Be a United states citizen or permanent resident
  • Be available full time between the dates specified on the Member Service Agreement
  • Be between the ages of 17-25
  • Able to pass a pre-service National Criminal History check (State, Sex Offender, and Federal)
