Do you enjoy the outdoors? Do you like getting your hands dirty and using power tools? Do you have an interest in forestry or silviculture?

The Corps Network (TCN) is looking for a Resource Assistant to provide timber marker support to the timber marker crew at a national forest. This internship position will participate in timber sales, marking, records, etc.

What is the Resource Assistants Program (RAP)?

Particular attention will be given to ensure full representation of women and participants from historically Black, Hispanic, and Native American schools or other schools with diverse student populations. Resource assistants work under the supervision of Forest Service staff to complete mission-critical work that demonstrates leadership, critical thinking, and strategic communication. Through collaboration, training, and mentorship Resource assistants gain the tools to launch their natural and cultural resource careers.

Position Description :

Perform timber sale preparation duties including; timber marking, timber cruising, timber sale layout, GPS traverse of sale units, interpretation and implementation of complex silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate timber for harvest. The incumbent will work independently or as a skilled member of a marking crew engaged in timber management primarily for forest health, longleaf restoration and wildlife habitat improvement. They may use a variety of hand and power tools, including GPS units, data records, and chainsaws. They will gather data and record information on timber volumes and conditions. Cleans, maintains, reconditions, and stores tools and equipment. May be assigned to other resource management activities such as recreation, fire, wildlife, or reforestation when not performing timber management duties.

Requirements :

Associates degree or higher in Forestry or related field; enjoy working outdoors – field investigation involves considerable walking and manual work; average physical dexterity and ability are required; fieldwork is performed in all weather conditions (often in hot and heavily forested areas); driver’s license is required
