Northern Bedrock’s mission is to develop enduring workforce and life skills in young people through service learning that supports historic preservation for the common good. Our Pathways to the Preservation Trades AmeriCorps program provides young adults (ages 18-25) the opportunity to learn real-world skills, in an effort to open the door to a future career. During the six-month field season crews meet in Duluth, MN, and travel to work on various historic sites and structures across the state of Minnesota.

Position Description :

The Crew Leader position is a 900 hour AmeriCorps service term commitment that runs from late April to November. Northern Bedrock Crew Leaders supervise and work alongside 5 Crew Members, preserving and repairing historic structures throughout Minnesota. This position involves physically challenging and team-oriented work. Projects may include masonry, plaster, cemetery monument resetting and cleaning, basic carpentry, and historic landscape restoration. Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, and all projects involve extended camping near the project site. Crew Leaders lead camping and team-building activities, and are the on-site resource for their crew members and staff during each project.

Crew Leaders earn a bi-weekly living stipend, and can take advantage of student loan forbearance during their service. Upon completion of the service term, AmeriCorps members receive an education award to be used on educational expenses. All Crew Members receive training and credentials in First-Aid/CPR, OSHA, and Leave No Trace.

This position is supervised by the Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps (NBHPC) Program Manager.

Job Duties :

Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Model and ensure safety is a top priority during all service projects
  • Follow and model all policies and procedures and assure compliance by crew members
  • Assist with project logistics, including communicating with project hosts, coordinating equipment and conducting inventory checks
  • Provide leadership, manage crew dynamics and facilitate debriefs
  • In conjunction with Staff, provide in-field guidance, training and direction of crew members for all projects
  • Maintain accurate crew, project program and safety records
  • Complete and submit required reports and other paperwork in a timely manner
  • Provide feedback to crew members through verbal on the spot communication and via a formal written evaluation at mid-term and end of term
Requirements :

  • Desire to learn about historic preservation
  • Technical and outdoor skills, including camp craft and knowledge of power and hand tools
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in an ever changing and evolving program
  • Committed to completing the entire AmeriCorps service term


  • 18-25 years old.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must pass criminal background check. Pass: no positive hits on the NSOPW and no history of violent offenses.
  • Must be a US Citizen, US National or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the US.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with no major moving violations in the last five years.
  • Able to perform the essential functions of the job 10 hours per day:
  • Manual labor – heavy lifting, bending, and carrying up to 50 pounds
  • Attention to detail and willingness to follow standards for historic preservation
  • Repetitive cleaning and restoring of historic structures and objects
  • Walking/working on steep or uneven terrain
  • Working outdoors, rain or shine, in heat/cold, and dealing with insect and pests
  • Working, eating, and camping in the outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Reliable transportation to report to meeting location in Duluth at the beginning of each project.
  • Always wear provided personal protective equipment.
  • AmeriCorps members may not engage in any Prohibited Activities as defined in the Member Service Agreement during AmeriCorps hours.

Applicants must be flexible to work 8, 10 hour days in a row, and then have 6 days off throughout their service term. Food, campsites and group camping gear are provided while working on projects. The crew is provided a corps vehicle to travel from Duluth to the worksite. All AmeriCorps members are required to take a ½ hour lunch which does not contribute to service hours.
