Organization/Program Description :

Alaska Trails is seeking a Trail Crew Leader who loves working with people and shares our commitment to trail stewardship. The Trail Crew Leader will support the organization in coordinating trail projects by leading a paid Trail Crew in 2021. In addition, the Crew Leader will have responsibility for training and supervising volunteers that will work in conjunction with the Trail Crew. This is a seasonal May – September full-time (40 hrs. per week plus, Monday-Friday, with some weekends). The Trail Crew Leader position will work on various projects in the Chugach National Forest and will require travel and backcountry work.

Position Description :

This position will train, direct and supervise a paid Trail Crew with three crew members. The crew will be conducting trail projects and supervising volunteers through the Alaska Trail Stewards program.

Job Duties :

Project Coordination and Planning:

  • Coordinate and supervise the Trail Crew
  • Organize and run volunteer work projects in conjunction with the Trail Crew
  • Work with land managers and staff in identifying appropriate volunteer trail projects
  • Develop plans and structure specifications for new trail construction, reconstruction, realignment and trail reroute projects in collaboration with land management project partners

Training and Leading Trail Crew and Volunteers:

  • Develop and implement a Trail Crew training program
  • Direct Trail Crew and volunteers with daily tasks for positive work-flow and attention to detail
  • Train, motivate and lead Trail Crew and volunteers to complete a variety of trail projects including annual maintenance, repairs and new construction
  • Ensure all technical work is to standards, including tread construction, drainage structures, and construction of steps, turnpike and puncheon
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety in all aspects
  • Ensure safety talk is delivered to crew and volunteers and documented
  • Calmly manage emergency situations following emergency response protocols
  • Positively represent Alaska Trails mission, programs and membership in all interactions with volunteers, trail users and others
  • Create an inclusive work environment free from harassment, and aptitude for developing skills in others
  • Report all incidents affecting the safety, health, and well-being of volunteers in a timely manner
Requirements :

Jobs skills, experience, and personal trails preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience leading a Trail Crew
  • Demonstrated skills in trail building and maintenance
  • Basic construction and basic wood working experience
  • USFS S-212 or equivalent chainsaw certification
  • Organizational skills, attention to detail, and technology skills to provide program and administrative support
  • Strong interpersonal skills to ensure a fun, safe and quality trail work experience
  • Cultural competency experience and demonstrated ability to work with people of diverse races, ages, genders, abilities and economic backgrounds
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to a team effort
  • Ability to remain calm and manage emergency situations
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment and follow minimum impact guidelines
  • Demonstrated flexibility in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, feeling comfortable with midcourse corrections
  • Current WFA or WFR certification and CPR certification
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a truck on highways and dirt roads
  • Ability to work weekends and 10-hour days
