The Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) initiative aims to increase access to the outdoors for everyone. Are you passionate about disability rights and accessibility in National Parks and public lands? Become a Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) member and help make the outdoors more accessible for all!
Role of YES Member at Homestead National Historical Park
Homestead National Historical Park remembers the many legacies of the Homestead Act of 1862. The Homestead Act gave individuals an opportunity to earn 160 acres of land from the federal government if they lived on the land for 5 years, built a shelter, and improved the land. The Act lasted 163 years and settled ten percent of all land in the United States.
Homestead National Historical Park has a large collection of unorganized photos taken at the park site and during park activities. These photos are not comprehensively organized, or accessible. Stewards Individual Placements, in partnership with Homestead National Historical Park, are seeking a YES service member to review and organize photos to be compiled into a comprehensive and accessible database. The YES member will work closely with the Park Ranger, and the Visual Information Specialist to write/develop alternative text of the media, ensuring photos are 508 compliant, ready to be used by screen readers, and more accessible for everyone to utilize. This position will also assist with routine visitor service at the front desk.
