ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

RMYC strives to meet the needs of the communities and public lands of northwest Colorado by offering a variety of programs and services for youth ages 11-30 years.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
This position serves as a member of a recreation crew supporting the Maroon Bells scenic area, a very popular area with special regulations to preserve its natural beauty and wildlife, and to ensure visitors can continue to enjoy wildlife viewing, hiking, and scenic views. Members are generally expected to serve 80 hours within the two week pay period, ten hour service days are the norm. Generally, members will serve four 10 hour days over a week period. Members may have 8-day hitches during their service and may serve over the weekend. Schedule determined by the host site.
JOB DUTIES
Duties for this position consist of a variety of patrols, shifts, and projects in support of the developed recreation program and Maroon Bells Scenic Area including:
● Operate the Welcome Station at the Maroon Bells to collect fees for day use and camping.
● Manage bike, foot, and vehicular traffic.
● Record Welcome Station data concerning sales and Special Use Permit holders.
● Monitor trails and developed recreation sites to provide visitors with information about recreation opportunities and regulations, protect wilderness resources, and inform visitors about wildlife presence and proper visitor safety.
● Report human-wildlife encounters to the district Wildlife Biologist. ● Provide information to the public at the Maroon Bells Information Center on ecology, geology, wildlife, and history of the Maroon Bells Scenic Area.
● Clean and maintain developed recreation sites including campgrounds and trailheads.
● Construct, repair, and rehabilitate developed recreation sites, facilities, and trails.
● Implement and maintain travel management devices such as signs, gates, and other closure methods.
● Assist with emergency situations and communicate with Aspen Ambulance, Aspen Police, Pitkin County Sheriffs and Aspen Mountain Rescue regarding emergency information.
REQUIREMENTS
Experience with the following is preferred but not required for the position, however there is an expectation that individuals will gain that experience throughout their service term, if needed. Successful applicants must have a strong work ethic and the ability to serve in remote locations in a variety of weather conditions.
● Positive attitude and desire to learn new skills.
● Practice effective communication and good people skills while serving with members of your team and the public.
● Ability and comfort being outdoors for long periods of time in inclement weather.
● Ability to perform physically demanding tasks for long periods of time, walk over steep, rocky, and uneven terrain, sometimes in dense vegetation, with up to a 40-pound pack.
● Skilled in the use of hand and power tools and in using construction tools (i.e. hammers, chainsaws, axes, drills, pumps, etc.) and have the ability to instruct crews, if necessary, in their proper use in repairing and building trails.
● Knowledge and ability to safely operate and maintain OHV equipment (i.e. UTV) and Forest Service vehicles on district roads and trails in order to safely travel to assigned areas.
