ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Founded in 1975, American YouthWorks (AYW) connects young adults to education, paid career training, and support services through Conservation Corps programs in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, and YouthBuild Pre-Apprenticeship programs in Austin and Taylor, TX. In a supportive learning environment, participants learn in-demand job skills while addressing critical community needs—disaster response through FEMA deployments, wildfire prevention and hazardous fuel reduction, public land and infrastructure maintenance, and access to affordable housing and healthcare. Our nationally recognized, award-winning programs welcome young adults from local communities and provide innovative pathways to meaningful employment and career success.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Interested in traveling around the state and exploring different ecosystems and landscapes while camping? TXCC Trails Across Texas (TAT) crew leaders will co-lead a crew of eight members to complete priority trail projects in Texas State Parks. Members and leaders are expected to perform strenuous physical tasks in all weather and be able to: hike 5+ miles per day, lift heavy objects, and perform manual tasks for long periods of time. Projects are focused on trail-building and maintenance, and construction of erosion control structures. Leaders will facilitate daily details of crew life, transport crews, and materials safely in program vans, and must have a clean driving record. Leaders should have at least 6 months of conservation experience and a willingness to work cohesively within a diverse crew environment.
JOB DUTIES
- Member Monthly Living Allowance (Stipend)
- $2,000/month for the Austin and San Antonio crews
- $1,500/month for the Houston and Baton Rouge crews
- Leader Monthly Living Allowance (Stipend)
- $2,200/month for the Austin and San Antonio crews
- $1,700/month for the Houston and Baton Rouge crews
- $1,374.60-$6,495 | Segal AmeriCorps Education Award: money for qualified student loans, higher education and training programs. Learn more about AmeriCorps and this award.

REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or GED
- Between the ages of 21-28
- US Citizenship or lawful permanent US Resident
- Clean 3-year Driving Record
- Prior experience in camping, backcountry travel, or related fieldwork
- Ability to hike 3-12 miles per day in rugged terrain, often wearing a 45lb backpack and carrying tools.
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds repeatedly and use hand and power tools
- Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check
- Commitment to completing an entire term of service
- Strong service ethic and desire to serve the community and the environment
- Ability to work with a diverse group of people
- Willingness to work long, hard hours in all weather conditions; ability to be away on overnight trips for up to 10 days at a tim
