ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The NorthWoods Conservation Corps (NWCC) is a hands-on education and conservation based education and employment opportunity for youth throughout New England. The NWCC has been providing young people with this important opportunity since 1995 as well as demonstrating a commitment to strengthening natural resource conservation, stewardship and sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities in Vermont and throughout New England.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Southern Field Coordinator will work with Stewart B McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, supporting two Youth Conservation Corps Crews between Westbrook and New Haven, CT. Each YCC Crew consists of 4 members (Ages 15-18) and 1 leader (18+). The Southern Field Coordinator and Crew Leaders are responsible for inspiring and motivating crew members while completing priority conservation projects in the field. Projects vary each year, but generally include trail maintenance and construction, addressing water quality issues, removing invasive species, and improving wildlife habitat. Coordinator will help facilitate projects by the Refuge and Project Partners.

JOB DUTIES
Duties:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Co-manage a crew of 4 members in the field
- Travel between crew locations as needed (1-3 times per week) to coordinate and assist with projects.
- Work with Crew Leader to delegate tasks to crew members with to effectively complete projects
- Facilitate “teachable moments” to crew members throughout the season
- Coordinate project logistics with NorthWoods and Refuge Staff
- Ensure a safe work environment for crew members and the public
- Routinely prepare and maintain tools/equipment before and after projects
- Serve as an exemplary leader, mentor, and role model for crew members
- Maintain a strong relationship and communication with project partners
Responsibilities and Expectations:
- Ensure that NorthWoods is a resource for the community for high-quality professional services, programming, facilities and expertise
- Maintain good communication and professional working relationships with NorthWoods staff, program participants, partners, and the general public
- Work independently and with coworkers to produce project outcomes on-schedule.
- Adhere to all NorthWoods procedures and policies related to staff conduct, safety and project implementation
REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications:
Candidates should possess, at a minimum, the following:
- Strong interest in natural resource conservation, management, and education - Experience working with and managing groups
- The ability to work responsibly and cooperatively as a member of a team - Commitment to protecting and improving the quality of the environment for human and natural communities
- Capable of performing strenuous physical labor under variety of outdoor conditions (ie. Summer heat, bugs, rain etc)
- We are excited to have applicants with previous trail maintenance experience but it is not required
- Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license
- Must be 18 or older by June 26, 2023
- Wilderness First Aid or Basic First Aid and CPR must be obtained by the first day of employment. Financial assistance/reimbursement is available, please inquire.
