ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Since 1984, Northwest Youth Corps has been providing opportunities for youth and young adults to learn, grow, and experience success. Our programs focus on education, challenge, community, leadership and empowerment, and typically include epic outdoor experiences in some of the most wild and scenic places on Earth. Our suite of programs have something to offer both a teenager looking for their first summer work experience and a recent college grad needing specific certifications to land their dream job. We partner with land management agencies and like-minded non-profits across the west to complete high priority conservation projects designed to improve the lands and communities in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Woodsboss will spend the duration of their time with NYC travelling to crews throughout the Pacific Northwest providing support both personal and technical. This includes but is not limited to ensuring projects are to our partner and NYC specifications and NYC standards, camps are to NYC standards; that they are clean, safe, and follow organizational protocol; and that seasonal staff presents a rich educational program. This position will also include giving project specific technical support to crews which may include, trail maintenance and construction, fence maintenance and construction, invasive species removal, and fuels reduction. A Woodsboss may also manage some weekends, recreational trips, and be responsible for resupplying crew food and equipment.
SCHEDULE: Woodsbosses will spend a majority of their time in the field supporting crew work. Earliest start date would be May 14th with potential to continue through multiple seasons.
COMPENSATION: $118 per day ($125 current WFR or EMT certification) transportation, camping locations, and meals provided. Woodsbosses generally are in the field seven days a week and earn up to $875 a week.
JOB DUTIES
REQUIREMENTS
- Education: Preferred college education in outdoor recreation, forestry, environmental education, resource management or related field.
- Experience: Experience leading or supervising a group or team in outdoor or conservation projects. The ideal candidate will have previous experience as a leader in the outdoor field or conservation corps program. We are seeking individuals with both technical skills to support crews on a variety of conservation projects and interpersonal skills to serve as a mentor to staff and participants.
- Certification: Current wilderness first aid/CPR or higher certifications are required; or willing to obtain prior to start. Applicants must be able to demonstrate an acceptable driving record during the last three years.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Must be able to pass a criminal history background check
- Must be at least 21 at start of employment
