POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Youth Program Director is an integral part of the Program Director team at Groundwork Denver, providing strategic direction for the organization regarding partnerships with local youth and communities. Reporting to the Associate Director, the Director of Youth Programs (“Youth Program Director”) oversees Groundwork Denver’s youth development programs with a focus on leadership, environmental stewardship, community engagement and environmental career development. The Youth Program Director serves as a bridge between the outdoor, hands-on work of the Youth Green Teams and the indoor, behind-the-scenes administrative office work to support the Green Teams. The Youth Program Director is responsible for recruiting, hiring, welcoming, training, listening to, partnering with, and equipping youth and young adults with knowledge and skills to further green their environments and succeed in their careers.
JOB DUTIES
• Oversee the implementation of the Youth Program, including hiring, partnership development, day-to-day operations, reporting and evaluation. Oversee Youth Program budget, ensuring grants and contract expenditures are aligned and budget is being spent responsibly and prudently
• Manage the recruitment and hiring of all youth employees.
• Build relationships with each youth and supervisor by visiting and working alongside youth teams throughout the year, and especially during the summer, the height of the program
• Provide supervision and evaluation for Program Assistant, Green Pathways Project Manager, interns, and other staff working to support the Youth Programs
• Collaborate with other Program Directors and Managers to center youth across program activities
• Coordinate closely with the volunteer program to engage youth employees in leading volunteer events
• Develop new grant proposals with the Executive Director and grant writer. Responsible for writing grant reports in coordination with the Executive Director and grant writer
• Successfully administer youth program grant funds, including adhering to contract billing and financial reporting requirements, ensuring expenses are allocated properly, and youth staff time is billed accurately
• Equip Youth Supervisors and Assistant Supervisors with trainings, policies, and other tools needed to ensure youth team’s safety and adherence to organizational risk management policies
• Build and maintain external partnerships while supporting Youth Supervisors to do the same in order to develop meaningful work for youth employees, build the funding base for the youth programs, and collaborate on efforts related to youth development
• Represent Groundwork Denver at external meetings, collaborations and community events related to youth development
• Continuously improve the youth program by overseeing the youth program evaluation, including survey development, data collection, and completing the evaluation reporting
REQUIREMENTS
• Understanding of race and class equity and a commitment to continuous personal learning and growth regarding race and class equity and how it impacts the organization, staff, youth, families and neighborhoods
• Experience working with the youth that Groundwork Denver employs or who have similar life experiences or backgrounds will be prioritized
• Passion for Groundwork Denver’s mission, youth development, and environmental justice
• At least 7 years work history in non-profit or youth-related industry, with 3 years of direct leadership experience
• Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, or similar field – or 4 years equivalent related work experience required. Master’s degree highly desired
• Highly organized to be able to track youth working on many projects at once, grant deliverables, budget detail, deadlines, and evaluation data
• Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside of the organization
• Supervisory experience and ability to mentor staff in ways to meet program goals through their programs/projects
• Demonstrated ability to engage youth from low-income, urban communities
• Fluency in languages in addition to English is highly desired
• Demonstrated successful project management experience
• The job requires both office and field work. Office work includes utilizing computer systems, managing phones, and sitting in meetings. Groundwork Denver’s main office is on the ground floor with no steps inside or outside of the building. The front door is wide enough for wheelchairs and other mobility supports, but does not have an automatic door opener
• Field work includes walking and biking in natural areas and parks; walking and biking in urban neighborhoods; field labor including bending, stooping, shoveling, weeding, cutting trees and plants; carrying heavy equipment; camping; and other physically challenging tasks
• Ability to travel to and from meetings and appointments
• Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS
This is a full-time, salaried and benefitted position with a range of $60,000-65,000, depending on experience.
