ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Co-founded in 1998 by two PhD students, Jerry Keir and Sanjay Pyare, at the University of Nevada, the Institute began as a field studies program to mobilize University faculty, students, and volunteers in applied science and direct service to support national parks, forests, open spaces and public lands. Since then, for over two decades, GBI has supported over 7,000 conservationist serving hundreds of projects to realize positive environmental change across the western US. GBI has raised over 165MM for research, education, and service, making impactful contributions to serving the public and our public lands. GBI is based out of Reno, Nevada, with Satellite offices in Las Vegas, Nevada and South Lake Tahoe, CA. GBI is the recipient of the 2015 USFS’s “Regional Forester Award,” the Nevada Governor’s Points of Light Award in 2005 and was named “Outstanding Non-government Organization” by Environmental Leadership in 2001.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The primary duty of the Chief Operations Officer (COO) is to support the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in the development and implementation of the GBI’s strategic plans and policies specific to Program implementation, development and long-term success. The COO provides leadership and direction to Program staff and regularly oversees the work of four or more senior GBI staff members as direct reports. Reno or Lake Tahoe preferred locations.
JOB DUTIES
Essential Job Functions:
Program Operational Leadership:
- Provide effective and inspiring guidance by being actively supportive of key GBI Programs and services, while developing a broad knowledge of all GBI operations.
- Leverage cross-program strengths to take advantage of new opportunities and/or to address organizational challenges.
- Lead, coach, develop, and retain GBI’s Program management team, emphasizing strategic analysis, planning, and program budgeting.
- Cooperatively develop and implement training programs
- Coalesce annual operational budget with GBI Program Departments, and manage effectively within this budget
- Explore workflow enhancements seeking efficiency with emphasis on improved quality and results
- Responsible for hiring, disciplinary and termination actions of Program staff in collaboration with the Senior Leadership Team.
Operations Implementation:
- Provide programmatic oversight and input for all implementation processes with the CEO and Senior Leadership.
- Coach Program staff as they implement work plans and operations.
- Develop and implement a system for tracking and reporting on the progress of Program initiatives.
- Promote and model effective communication.
External Relationship Development:
- Manage and cultivate existing agency partnerships and relationships with new or existing funding sources
- Publicly represent GBI with the media and external constituency groups including community, governmental, and private organizations and build excitement for GBI’s mission.

- Practical knowledge of or experience with similar non-profit organizations, resource management oriented federal, state or NGO agencies.
- Relevant or related field experience preferred – knowledge of and/or experience in high desert and Great Basin ecology is ideal though not required.
- Eager and able to work in a dynamic and often fast-paced environment, consistently enacting high performance standards and an engaged work and team ethic in support of GBI and its stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse audience including members of the public, agency resource staff and management, and GBI Program and Administrative staff.
- Possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license, an insurable record, and the ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on and off paved roads.
- Meet requirements of federal agency security background checks (e.g., FBI criminal and National Sex Offender Public Registry, Department of Interior Security Screening).
- Capable of leading and engaging a hybrid team of both remote based and in-person colleagues
- High level of organization and attention to detail with demonstrated field and leadership skills.
- Proven skills in financial management and team development. Strong management, delegation and leadership skills and speaking/presentation abilities with a high level of organization.
- Effective problem solving skills and ability to share skills and knowledge with others.
- Demonstrate sensitivity, understanding and an ability to effectively engage people from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, ability and ethnic backgrounds.

LOCATION
Based at GBI offices in Reno, NV The “Biggest Little City in the World” the greater Reno-Sparks metropolitan area has a population of over 435,000. The city is a high desert landscape ~4,500 feet above sea level, at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains along the Truckee River, as it flows from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake. Weather is mild, but with distinct four seasons. Reno offers easy access to world-class outdoor recreation including driving distance to Yosemite and Death Valley National Parks, the Pacific Ocean, and California redwood forests.
