POSITION DESCRIPTION
The intern will be enmeshed in the day-to-day operations of the volunteer trail crew program and be able to provide their perspective, educational expertise, and analytical thought to ways of modernizing and improving the current program. The intern will be able to recommend meaningful improvements to enhance the structure of operations so that it is resilient to cultural and climate changes. The intern will be expected to participate as a member of the field-based operations of the volunteer trail crew program, make observations of the human dynamics of the crew, offer recommendations for meaningful improvements, and support annual reporting of crew accomplishments.
Start Date: July 15th preferred but can accommodate a later start date due to candidate scheduling conflicts.
Duration: 4.5 months, with option to extend term with additional responsibilities
JOB DUTIES
- Draw observations of the experience (for themselves and by others), and submit a weekly journal to the supervisor based on the following aspects:
- Evaluate balance of productivity with the cultivation of human engagement
- Understand how crew sessions which last 5-8 days fit and interact with the schedules of participants.
- Evaluate efficiencies that may reduce the carbon-footprint of this program.
- Identify aspects of operations to be retained or altered for improvement to best reflect ATC’s interest in inclusive and equitable work.
- Analyze survey data that includes past and current crew participants centered on motivations, obstacles, scheduling, and other recommendations.
- Create a presentation on the final findings and recommendations to the ATC Trail Operations Leadership team to assist in future restructuring of the crew program for years to come.
- Participate in hands-on-trail rehabilitation and construction tasks which contribute to sustainability and climate change initiatives.
- Support the development of annual crew program reports that highlight project accomplishments, volunteer hours, and demographics.
- Mentoring and guidance will be offered by ATC program managers, as well as trail crew staff on all facets of program administration, trail crew operations, risk management, volunteer management, etc.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Traveling without assistance over uneven, variable terrain, including but not limited to flat,
uphill, and downhill, with varying trail width, where obstructions include rocks, roots steps,
water bars, log bridges, slick surfaces, streams, muddy areas, or standing water. - Carrying personal and group gear, as well as tools and safety equipment, which combined could weigh between 20-50 lbs. for up to 3 miles.
- Performing trail work tasks that include but are not limited to lifting up to 50 lbs. of weight, swinging hand tools, cutting annual growth, raking or digging out drains, installing erosion control features, moving heavy logs or rocks, vegetation clearing, tread definition or side hill bench construction, constructing trail features using hand tools.
- Extensive travel and evening and weekend work will be required.
- Occasionally communicates with individuals by phone, email, virtual meeting, and in-person.
REQUIREMENTS
- Currently pursuing a degree in outdoor recreation, nonprofit management, sociology, natural resource management, or other related fields
- Ability to perform manual labor outdoors, experience in hiking or backpacking
- A go-getter with the ability to deliver a high-quality work product
- Organized and goal-oriented
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Motivated team player with strong interpersonal, organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy intends this internship for students enrolled in educational pursuits. ATC anticipates students will bring knowledge and experience from their studies in the following program areas that will provide particular benefit to the project:
- Environmental education / outdoor recreation
- Resource management / Forestry
- Social sciences / Sociology / Psychology
