Members of the Ukiah branch of the California Conservation Corps have joined more than 450 CCC members working in Southern California to aid firefighting efforts.

"Emergency response is part of our mission," said CCC Director David Muraki. "We'll go wherever they need us."

Thirty-five crews are providing initial attack on fire lines as well as providing fire camp support for fires in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. Additional CCC members may be called up in the coming days.

Muraki said crews may also stay in the area once the fires are out to help with recovery efforts. The CCC did similar work this summer following the Angora Fire in the Lake Tahoe area in June. Work could include debris removal, erosion control and revegetation efforts.

In addition to Ukiah, CCC crews have traveled from Pomona, Redding, Watsonville, Norwalk and Auburn counties, among others.

CCC members join Mendocino County firefighters and Red Cross volunteers in helping with the firefighting effort in Southern California.

Nine fires are still burning, from north of Santa Clara to the U.S.-Mexico border.
